  • Which ATX's will work?

Ok i posted in the repair help forum some problems i was having with the 91 GL ATX i just bought and talked about it slipping, but i figured i would post this in a different section just in case someone else wanted to know. So i'm not sure if im posting in the right section, but I figured if it was out of another car besides a festiva it must be custom lol. Now if i can't correct the slipping problem and have to find another ATX i'm wondering which ones will work other than another festiva? Can i use one out of a aspire or escort or some other mazda/ford? Any info would be great thanks

Your looking for a non-stock option so yeah this is the right area.

As far as I know the escort/protege ones will not work as the ecu controls when if shifts.

The aspire one I honestly dont know but it might.

There has been some talk of a atx upgrade outta the 1989 323 as it has a 4 speed auto that is a standalone trans.

On a side note have you changed the filter & fluid on the trans? try adding some of the lucas slick shift or whatever its called. Those might help you if the trans hasn't been shifting bad for too long.

No not yet. I got the car last night and when i test drove it it shifted fine. But there was a line the comes from the tranny in the front of the car that was leaking that had a rubber hose and clamp and it was leaking where the clamp was like it wasn't tight, and i didn't have any tools so i drove it 30 mins home and pulled into the park store to get some wires for it and it slipped when i was pulling in. I check the fluid and it was about a court low. I didn't know what kind it took so i got the merc V. Which when i got home and looked on here i found out it takes the merc lV. But when i left it still slipped a little then started driving fine. Just shifting a little hard So i'm not sure if it was still slipping cause it wasnt circulated through yet or whatever. My house was like 5 miles from the part store and i didn't want to beat on it or test to see if it had fully stop slipping cause when i stop at a light it starts getting hot. So before i go doing anything to test the tranny i just wanted to make it home and do the minor TLC it needs. Like putting a new Tstat in it wires and getting the tranny fluid and filter changed. Hopefully the Tstat will fix the over heating. But yeah if the tranny issue doesn't get resolved i'm looking for other options besides a festiva cause theres not alot of auto festivas in the junk yard

Yeah so its the trans cooler line thats leaking(the one that goes to the radiator) Not really a big deal just get that fixed. I've just put any old ATF in the auto & its fine. IF your doing some maintenance things to the car think hard about changing the trans fluid & filter.

Yeah i know it could make it worse. Usually if you do it before it has problems, even if it is at 120K like this one, it will be fine. But mine slipped cause it got low. So im still taking a chance but i don't want to ride with the wrong stuff cause it might just make it worse anyway. But thanks for the ideals
