I am tired of destroying tranny's!! I do not think I am alone, so time to try to work on the problem. What seems to be the biggest killer of the tranny? Wheel hop? tourqe? Please do not tell me burning out unless you have more info than that... such as burn outs with wheel hop or something like that! thanks!

What destroys our tranny? wheel hop?

I would say wheel hop. The wheel bounces and spins up then grabs real hard. Think of it like an impact wrench. Burnouts are fine as long as the wheels are spinning. Now a B6T with high boost puts out alot of torque that is also a problem.

It was just the amount of torque that killed mine with the B6T. I never really did any burnouts or ever had any wheel hop.* Retired Festiva-er*

My spider gears went out twice. I installed a Phantom Grip they never failed again and some of the torque steer went away. Then I split a few cases due to the high strain levels inside the trans. So I welded up a few reinforcement bars on the outside of the case, it never failed again. I then stripped the teeth right off of the third gear set. I replaced it with spare parts laying around. Then three races later I stripped all of the teeth right off of the second gear set and said fu** this piece of sh** tranny and am working a different solution to the problem.

tranny
not to steer this post in a different direction but what is your solution. i have been thinking about the escort gt tranny my hang up is the c/v shafts. custom shafts are very pricey and if the festiva shafts will fit there is the next weak point. I'm just wanting some food for thought .p.p i know that the gt tranny will hit the frame but i am a proficient welder and notching the frame is no sweat.

Nonono, That has already been done. Just use the tranny that came with the motor and the Mercury Capri axles also. I can't talks shit about my swap till I gots pics or I will get yelled at. I'm not trying to hide it I just want to know it is going to work before saying how great an idea is.

can we get a pic of the renforcement bars you added? Changing the tranny is a solution, but I am looking for something to do to the OEM tran. My one car I wanna be able to say it is the Oem block and tranny. The LSD is an option. Hows about swapping a differ from another tran?

It's an oscillation of your suspension. On a leaf sprung vehicle, it happens when the leaf gets bent into an S shape then springs back into it's regular flattened U shape. That lifts the tire, then slams it back down onto the ground again. In that case, it's not so much the spring flexing that's bad, but the traction/no traction bouncing that puts incredible loads into the drivetrain. On many coil sprung or strut suspensions, a big culprit are rubber bushings. They flex, then spring back and can do the same thing. If you've only got a light case of wheel hop, often swapping in polyurethane bushings will rid you of the problem. The overall suspension design can also factor in, but the bushings are definitely a step in the right direction.
