I'm guessing but to take advantage of higher octane you need to advance your timing.. correct? 10 is the stock setting? What setting you would have to use if your running 91/92, would even make much a difference? I would think that racing gas, which is 110?, will probably be a little to much for the 1.3. This is for a 94 aspire btw, but I guess it could apply to all. It currently runs better on 89 than 87 but I haven't ran 91 to compare, it may be set to 8 or 9 instead 10, setting the timing was a bear. I'm planning on going to the track in March to work on my timing. The aspire couldn't be a slow as my auto escort which only ran a 18.1. I still have to redo the exhaust but that isn't done by then i'll run the festiva.

Setting timing for higher octane?

I think base timing on carbed festies is 4Deg btdc and FI cars are 8deg btdc. under 95-100 octane, I wouldn't worry about screwing with the timing too much. I run Fester at 8 deg, but he's carbed, and I use 87 octane with no problems.Jim DeAngelis

To be honest I did not see any significant (as in worthwhile) gains from running 10 BTDC and 14 BTDC with 93 octane... And just wondering... Why would you want to run 110 in a stock B3??? Not even a semi-modified B3 would see any gains... Goodluck tuning the B3, I just threw mine out... -KyleCosmic Blue 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 - Mostly Stock...

timing
you want the timing right on the edge of spark knock to maximize the efficiency of the fuel you are burning. get your engine to operating temperature, advance your timing, rev the motor, and listen for spark knock, adjust until you are just a hare under knocking, that is the back-woods hillbilly way, and it works on my 93 5.0l mustang lx, or i could be full of crap

timing
in general order...timing is perfect for the worst case ( heat, bad gaz...)
you can crank it 2-4 deg with safety in mind. the 1.3 engine wont knock, it melt pistons and rings
if you crank it up too much your engine temp come higher and it produce less power. try to keep it near stock but you can add few deg with no problem.
