  • carb v.s. EFI need help

    Hi my name is william and i need some addvice i am currently in the process of swaping a b6 in to my 89 ford festiva ... proplem is, its carbureted . I was going to use the b3 intake on a b6 ,but iam going to race the car and dont think the stock carb will keep up with the b6 (not sure thow) correct me if i am wrong ,but what i need to know is , is i am goin to race this car so i dont need any thing such as light or any thing i can even go push button start so what would i need from the doner car as far as a herness just to run the motor ... or would it be easer to use a harness a.out of a EFI festiva and just splice the b6 in..... i need help any info would be help full.

    You could put on a Weber carb. Read drdan's thread.
    I wouldn't bother changing the harness to EFI because you would have to change the gas tank for the electric pump.

      yeah I've seen this thread before and had thought of doing this my self... and as for the tank its out any ways i have a fuel cell, i need a in line pump thow. I just thought that EFI would be easier than finding a carb used. I haven't done much looking for one though, but eBay sounds like my best bett ...thanks

        carbs are CHEAP!! and they work and are easy to install in your car as is. installing an EFI system isn't going to be fun or fast, especially is you don't like wireing.
        Trees aren't kind to me...

          Leave it carb. I have a fuel injected engine. The possibilities of something going wrong in a carb is really small. All you have is a small electric pump or mechanical. Not more than 7 psi max and some carb jets. With a fi there is the ecu, lots of sensors, injectors, high pressure fuel pump 43.5 psi (lot of pressure). And if one go wrong the engine doesn't work properly. Some say that efi is for fuel economy. I don't think it's true. A carb engine is economical as an efi engine.

            Go with a carb, but get either a Weber (big $$) or one from an early eighties Ford Escort 1.6L (less $$ and works just as well). You will need a carb adapter or re-work the intake manifold mounting base for the carb which involves some welding, surfacing, and drilling and tapping new mounting holes. Ebay usually has either new or rebuilt Escort carbs for under a $100. You will need your B3 carbed distributor with the B6.

              escoct carbs work! That's good i bett i could get one at the local j/y to... thanks for all the info guys! festy46 do you run the b3 in that race car ? if so the b6 should be pretty competitive in the hornet racing i do .

                Spend a few extra bucks and get a new or rebuilt carb from eBay instead of one from a junk yard that you may end up rebuilding anyway. There are several on eBay right now for $75. Seven or eight years ago, you could be a top 5 car with a B3, but now with everybody running the much newer cars with high hp engines, you will need at least a B6.

                  well guys i thank i have a problem when i pulled the intake off my b3 to stick on my b6 i got from a 92 323 i noticed the water ports on the head and the ports on the intake are off a bit will this intake even work on b6 ? also the intake ports are tear drop shape on the b6 .... as on the b3 they are round

                    It doesn't sound like it will work. You need to be able to get sealing around the intake ports & water ports. You might be able to make your own gasket.

                        Well the gaskets not the problem i can use one from the b3 but if they dont line up on their they wont on the head right ....every were i look they say you can swaP a carbed intake on a EFI motor

                          I think I read somewhere that the pre '90 B6 head is the same as the B3, so the intake may only bolt up to a pre '90 B6 head, but I may be wrong.

                            Man i guess i will have to see if i can return that motor and swap it for a pre 90 1.6 unless i could make a adapter plate for my intake

                              if you're racing that motor, i don't know i'd really worry about the coolent ports in the intake. i think i'd plug them off and run it like that, but that's just me....
