  • Modify FMS B6 header for B8?

Arty said he found the FMS B6 header to be too large to benefit the average B6 engine, especially at lower RPMs. I'm not ever planning on a maxed out B6 that does up to 9K RPMs, so I was wondering what if the tubes of the B6 header were cut out of the flange and spread apart to be rewelded to another flange to fit the B8. I don't think there are any factory B8 (16 valve, SOHC) headers available anywhere, so I had been planning on getting a custom header made.

Would it be a bit cheaper to just have my B6 header modified to fit the B8? Would this be practical and cost-effective, or present a bigger can of worms to a custom welder than making one from scratch?

Here are pics of the header I'm talking about:

    Thanks,

i think the b8 is even spacing like the bp is it not? i think it would be eaiser to take a civic "D" series header and weld a new flange...and ALOT cheaper and eaiser to find than a b6 one...

also is that header for a 1st or 2nd gen b6?

I think it fits 1st gen stock but has to have a couple different holes drilled to fit the later B6s. I drilled two of them; I did okay on one, but the other one is off by about 1/16" and needs to be redone.

In other words, I have this one already. I think I paid around $200 for it years ago. I know the other end comes close to the axle shaft so it would fit well if the welder kept the relationship to the exhaust face the same. I don't know about Civic headers...

Look at the upper picture. You'll see two extra holes next to existing ones. IIRC, the one on the left is the one I messed up. The ones I drilled are slightly smaller and don't have the blue finish inside them.

Hey I'd buy that b6 header and you could use that cash to go towards a b8 header it's just a thought let me know I've been looking for a b6 header for a while so I would hate for you to cut it up but if you do cut it up I would still but just the flange

I don't know about the exhaust port spacing, but the intake spacing for the mid eighties Escort 1.6 are perfect to match the spacing on a B8 head. I have done this to carb the B8 by cutting the Escort flange off and welding a 1/2" aluminium plate to the Escort intake. If the Escort exhaust spacing would match the B8 perhaps you could find a header for the 1.6 Escort and re-work the flange on it easier than trying to spread the B6 header.
          You gonna race that thing?

Thanks guys. You are giving me more things to think about. I doubt I'll sell my B6 header, since an "ultimate B6" is not completely off the table yet.

I'll check into Escort 1.6 headers to see what is available and possible.

Now what about reworking the flange on a BP header? Or would the collectors be too large diameter for best B8 scavenging?

You may look at a BP header from summit racing. If the port spacing, shape and size is close, a good metal fab shop can make an adapter plate.

Any news on this attempt? I have way to many b8me items to shove off to get a bp. Would rather work with the engine/ecu I have.
