  • Mazda F2 (F2T)

Anybody know anything about these engines; ie, will they fit in a Festy ? I know it is an inline 4 with 12 valves, single cam. Apparently they came in the 88-92 Mazda 626 with the strongest transmission Mazda ever made. Just don't know if the width is too long for the Festy "frame" rails. Been watching a 626 that's sitting in a yard, don't know if it's a turbo or not. Any knowledge or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tex

I love the F2s, don't know much about the turbo version, haven't messed with it much. But the N/A F2 are quite torquey for their size. My '90 MX6 rarely sees first gear lol. They are too wide for the Festiva though, by a good bit if you use the MX6/626 trans. Maybe if you could find a smaller trans, but even then, the F2 is a big motor and also pretty heavy.
    No festiva for me ATM...

After five minutes of searching, it seems like MC1 is the only member who has put any operationalization into this swap. AKA the only one who has gone beyond the theoretical to actual considerations.

FYI most will probably shoot you down and tell you to just can the lofty goals and settle for a B6/B8/B6DE/BP swap with a turbo or a B6T. However, you're right... the H-type is pretty appealing, despite it's 100LBS weight. Htch is right though... it's a giant engine and transmission combo... axles would be a pain, and you'll be cutting the front frame probably.

IF you can do a bp swap then this swap is possible. There is a protege on clubprotege with a f2t motor in it. The key is to not use the h series tranny and use the g series off the f2 motor instead.

^^ Hmmm.... One thing to consider here is that the protege frame rails are wider than the festiva. A BP will go in a festiva, but you either have to use the stock festy trans (waaay too week for a F2T) and relocate the engine trans combo more toward the drivers side or you have to cut the pass side frame rail to clear the BPs crank pulley. Either way, the F2T/Gseries combo will be wider than the BP which already requires cutting. But if someone wants to do it I'm all for it. Not saying it can't be done, just that it can't be done without modding the frame rails (same goes for a BP for the most part)

^ nope different bell housings. You could get a 5 speed na trans(g-series) take the thing apart and swap the diff out for an 26 spine which would allow you to use xr2 axles. Oh and the main issue with this path is the g-series behind a engine that does great torque in stock form, think will destroy the trans rather quickly. Think bp with festiva e-series.

With this setup you would only have to box about 4 inches of passengerside frame rail.

the h-series it's a beast. Almost as beefy as the toyota trans the protege guys are using for big power. Besides needing to box the driverside as well, you have some steering rack interference and either custom axles or custom diff.

Fitting both into the festiva bay would be an engineering exercise(too say the least) and costly.

Then the f2t weighs quite a bit more. Its derived from mazdas diesel motors. Thats why it's so durable.

the fe3(dohc) would also bolt up to the h-series. That would be fun & relativly cheaper. The go for 500 on ebay. But then again it's the issue of a trans.

... Now an aspire with the larger engine bay...

True for some but not on my festiva. My engine uses the f-series hydro and we didn't have to cut anything just hammer in the drivers side rail. Even then after everything was done we didn't even have to do that. I have about a inch of space between the passengers side frame rail and the crank pulley. Don't know why I have this much space to play with but I do.

Yeah it's a bp but bigger in every area. And iirc you swap in the f2t crank anf get a 2.3l stroker. This whole wife leaving me thing has put most things on hole for a while, but I still plan on sliding one on in. might have to make a tube chassis front end, but that is what welders are for. Atleast that way I can add a better control arm setup, to limit wheel hop & maybe put most of that power to the ground. Its step 1 of 3 for my festiva plans.

Your right with my bp & g series I didn't box the frame, but did beast it to html with a bfh.
