  • B6 crank pulley mod?

Right now my B6 crank pulley is off of Aqua while I wait for another nice day to redo the crank seal (wrong one, resulting in massive oil leak).

On both my B6 swaps, I used the original 323 pulley that has a large grooved run for a flat A/C belt, which I don't need. This morning I took my pulley into a machine shop to see about having the run cut off on a lathe to provide more room for working on the crank area and also reduce the weight some. While they could do it, I asked about what looked like two pieces pressed together with some rubber material visible on the backside. They confirmed that cutting off the unneeded part might result in some imbalance in what was obviously a balanced "harmonic" part.

So now I'm not sure. Here are some pics of my pulley:

Although I would like a lighter part, I think I can reinstall it with no problem just like I took it off the car (by lowering the engine on the right side).

Any thoughts on this? Would turning off the A/C belt part result in compromised engine harmonics? If so, I'll leave it alone.

    Thanks,

    Karl

Would a Aspire outer pulley work? I can't recall exactly but I don't think they had a balancer on them.

I don't know. I'll be looking at my spare parts to see if anything else could work. Maybe a trip to the 'yard is also in order. There's a new 323 there I ain't looked at yet. Perhaps it has a lighter crank pulley I could snatch.

what about BP pulleys or newer Rio 1.5L engines as an alternative?

Thanks. When I'm in the 'yard I'll look for those other engine cranks, too.

I'll probably put my current crank pulley back on, and when I get a lighter one, I suppose it shouldn't take more than an hour to swap 'em out.

The ideal part would be a pulley from a '93 Festiva with the big nose crankshaft. That would give you what you're trying to do by chopping the serpentine pulley off the one you have, but without any balance problems.

Wouldn't a '92 Festiva have the large nose crankshaft?

And 92's seem to be rare, at least around here. I've had 1-'88, 1-'89, 1-'90, 3-91's, 1-'93 and no 92's.

I checked the build date of Twinstiva: 4/7/'92. I suppose her B3 has the small nose. Oh well.

I've remove the A/C part of my BP crank pulley on a lathe and I had no problem since the last 10 000KM

I've also removed the serpentine portion of my bp pulley, then added spacers and the a/c portion of the '93 festiva pulley.

I tried to run the '93 crank pulley, but harmonics killed my oil pump. Bp's need a dampner.

I have the "big nose" crank pulley from a '93 if you need it.

I've done the same to the B6 crank pulley. They aren't a balancer, just a damper. B series engines are internally balanced.
