  • T3 on a B6ME?

I've been reading for a couple of hours now and I though maybe it best to just ask.

I'm currently building an MX-3 B6ME to swap into my 93 and I've also been thinking about the possibility of doing a rear turbo on it. I also have a small salvage yard and I have a Volvo 740 with a Garrett T3 installed. I wrote down the numbers on the ID plate and from what I could find it looks to be a T3 50 trim with a .42 compressor housing and a .48 turbine housing. Would this be a good candidate to use with the B6ME?

    EDIT:
Sorry, I just noticed that this should probably be in the "Turbo Engine Swap" section

the compressor is a bit small, but it should work well in a smaller engine.

throw it on... it sounds like a good size for a quick spooling turbro and, its a T3 flange so IF it ever blows up, a new one will just bolt on... and you wont have to worry about making a new down pipe with a rear mount turbo lol...

Sweet! :thumbright: I wanted to make sure it was a feasible option before going to the trouble of taking it off the car and possibly purchasing a rebuild kit.

Glad to hear it's a smaller size as well! I was worried about it being too big since the literature I've been finding for the TBO363 says it was used on 2.0/2.3 liter engines

you want a rebuild kit anyway, even if it's just for the center section seals.

Oh ya, I definitely agree! Wouldn't dream of bolting on a JY unit with going through it first. I just wanted to make sure the turbo would be suitable for my application before I put forth the effort to remove it and look into getting a kit. And from what you're saying it sounds like I've found one that will work

Plus "free turbo" just screams "rebuild kit" LOL

What up D!!! I've been in and out over the past few months but mainly lurking when Cody (lanemayer14) would tell me about something in the FS area or other interesting projects going on.

It was pretty good man! Lots of bikes and LOTS of parties

I'm slowly getting back into the Festy game again. Been working on a 90 L Plus that has turned into a real headache of a project but hopefully it will be done soon. Then it's an Aspire motor for my white 93, then a bottom end for an 89, then I get to start on my blue 93 again that's getting the B6ME.

i have the b6me swap and i was going to turbo mine but u will need a stand alone ecu bc there is nothing u can do managment wise bc its a sohc 16 valve, i even called corksport to see if they knew of anything that would work and i was told boldly NO, so u might wanna look int a stand alone ecu. u can problay use a miata pnp kit from megasquirt, u would need alot of random parts tho to make it work bc im not sure about the compatibility of the dohc vs sohc megasquirt or if the computer will even notice.

That's a load of bullcrap. You absolutely do not need a standalone ECU to boost an NA engine...though it helps.

                        This ^^

As long as you're not going nuts with the boost.

I don't plan on getting crazy with the boost. Just a fun daily driver with a hint of weekend warrior.

What about this setup with the MX-3 ECU:

FMU + Air flow converter + Electronic boost control

I'm just thinking out loud here.

                            Definitely. SAFC-II would do fine.

It's not a crazy build, so there's no urgent need to remap the timing curves via PCM overwrite or anything. A 1:1 FPR, SAFC II and some wideband tuning.

Awesome! I always like to hear good news

I got that from an article I read about an MX-3 build where the guy is running an IHI RHB-5 turbocharger with an ATI FMU, A'PEXi SAFC, and a GReddy Profec B. All with a basically stock ECM and it's putting down some respectable numbers to the tune of 195.5hp and 199.2 lb-ft of torque at only 6 psi. I'd be more than happy with those kinds of numbers and with proper tuning I think that boost level (or even 8psi) would be conservative enough to provide both fun and longevity.

Between my Mustang, a few builds we've done, and just hanging out with all the local Mustang guys over the past few years I've become pretty good friends with the local dyno shop owner. He started out tuning mostly Mustangs, F bodies, and various other domestics but he's got a thing for Nissans and Toyotas and in the last couple of years he's been doing a ton of import tuning. I'm gonna stop by his shop and talk to him about options and what he can do for/with Mazda electronics and any add on's or piggy back type systems I may have to use with this type of setup. Plus he'll be the first place I take it to when finished so I can do some pulls with AFR to make sure everything is copacetic and it isn't going lean which (as we all know) is the quick road to BOOM
