I'll agree that the PCM might be difficult to overwrite since there might be a significant lack of aftermarket tuning support for the platform. However, even a wide band 02 and some time at the local 'test track' with a few wrenches might be all you really need.

Tuned several vehicles with a bit of know-how and a dozen or so 3rd gear pulls on an access road
    1989 Carby L: Stock. Slow.
1998 Mustang Cobra: ported heads, cams, longtubes, 4.30 gears
2016 Focus ST: daily driven go-kart

Mark I ran a 13.33 with a stock ecu and injectors. All i added was a 12:1 fmu and an extra fuel pump to help support the pressures. I was just limited to about 10 lbs. of boost.

No piggyback or anything ecu-wise was done.

      Now I run a megasquirt.

Great info guys! It sounds as if a good starting point would be to just install an FMU and upgraded pump. Then either a wideband or take to the dyno and do some pulls with AFR in order to tune and verify mixture. I'll probably do both, it would be nice to have the wideband for constant monitoring.

@ Greg - I thought I remembered that you weren't running anything exotic with your initial setup, but it's been a while since I've read through your posts. Thanks for verifying this I'm totally fine with a 10lb boost limit

As I get closer to doing this I'm going to go back and read all of your build posts and such to help keep me pointed in the right direction :thumbright:

Just as a rule of thumb.....pull 1 degree of timing per 1 lb. of boost before you start. I found that on 93 I could get away with the stock 10*, but all setups are different.

Ahhhh, again...good info! So it's kind of like the rule for running nitrous where you pull around 2* for every 50hp of juice. Do you run a colder heat range of plug too?
