  • Installed Homemade Short Shifter & New Bushings!

So you might have seen my writeup on my homemade short shifter here:
Discuss making performance enhancements to the OEM-spec engine in your Festiva or Aspire.

I took a before and after video of my shift pattern and slop when in gear.

    Before Video:
This was how my stock 1992 Ford Festiva shifting was before installing my homemade short shifter and new shift bushings. Yes, in the video I said Shift Bear...

After Installing Homemade Short Shifter with New Bushings Video:
I took a stock Ford Festiva shift lever and extended it about a half an inch below the ball on the lever thus creating a "short" shifter. While I was under th...

If you notice slop in your shifting, I'd highly recomend replacing your shifter bushings. The shorter throw is fantastic as well.

    Hope this helps

Do you think you could make it any shorter than this? I want to install the civic one, but I'm tall and would like to have a taller shifter. What would it take for me to buy one from you? I suck at welding.

very confusing comments....lol. You ask for it to be shorter then you ask for a longer one. Is the stock Festy one ok with you? If so....that is all he used...he just shortened the pattern by extending the piece after the ball.

I'd consider selling you mine...... I was thinking about trying to make an even "shorter throw" one

I could technically make a "taller" shifter too I suppose by extending the rod BOTH ways (above and below the ball).

I thought about doing that for myself as well

What's the confusing part? He obviously means a tall shifter with a short throw.

Agreed. These are very popular in various types of high-speed racing where the steering wheel and shifter need to be very close together for minimal response times and maximum efficiency. I can see why he'd want a taller shifter... mine's definitely pretty low, but I suppose you sorta get used to it.

EDIT: Get pictures of the one sasquatch made for example, that's a great exhibit A of a tall shifter with a super-short throw.

Those "Ape Hanger" shift poles were popular in CA in the late 50s early 60s. Anything you could imagine was used as a shifter knob. Beer tap handles were popular. I still have a new Miller handle somewhere in my landfill - a.k.a. garage.

Google "kakashifter", find the link for redpepperracing.com.

That guy is a god among men, building a 3rd gen civic hatch as an autox street car. The kakashifter was lengthened on both ends to shorten the throw back after lengthening the shifter to move it closer to the wheel.
