  • exhaust header help?!

Ok, so I added an exhaust header and no my motor runs hotter and I am getting a little spark knock. should I retard my timing to compensate for the more free flowing exhaust? If so, what should I set it at? I am currently running about -6 or 6 deg btdc oh wait I might have that wrong. its 6 degrees towards the firewall from the pointer wich is on left side of the degree marker about 3" away. whats up with the timing degree marker if there is a different spot that i check the pulley off of. its confusing if you go by the book because it says to go by the timing degree plate but if I do I am way off time. So I have to go by the pointer that is just to the left. OH MY BAD, 1992 ford festiva 1.3 5spd F.I. non a/c anyhow, I was told to retard my timing to compensate but what do you all think I should do?

run better gas.... or find the right notch on your pulley and then re-time the car.

also, which header did you use?

Yes, get the timing figured out and set first. Then see how it acts. You should not have to retard ignition timing due to adding a header/free flowing exhaust......as long as the fuel mixture is correct. The header can cause it to run lean, which will cause the symptoms you describe. However, on an EFI car it should compensate. I wouldn't have expected you would have problems. You may have other issues like a fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, vacuum leak etc..
In any event, you need to get the timing set first.

On second thought, I think you have one of the ultra rare "header non-compatible" Festivas, so you'll just have to sell me your header dirt cheap!!! (LOL)
