  • got a 5spd and a Phantom Grip

My clutch is shot on my 89L and I picked up a 5spd for $100. split the case and everything looks fine inside. Last Friday I ordered a phantom grip for it. M diff is sitting on my workbench waiting for the PG to arrive. I'm also fabbing up a 4th mount for the engine/trans. It will go where the battery currently resides, and the battery will be going into the back.

Hopefully everything works out ok, I'm hoping to have it in my Memorial day weekend. there is a local rally-x I would like to attend.

What does a phantom grip cost you?
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

I'm interested in your 4th mount idea. Please take pics of the construction of it and post them.

I seriously hope you didn't spend the $300 brand new price for the phantom grip, I have one in my car and it helps but id never spend $300 for it, I only paid $50 for mine

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Well, I paid about 275 with the "upgrade" springs included. I scoured the Internet and just couldn't find it any cheaper. I'd love to find one for $50, but I'm not that lucky.

I've never seen a failed PG, I'm curious as to how that happened.

I'm using the $100 (e series I guess) trans that I don't have because the money for another trans, flywheel, axles and clutch. Not to mention an LSD on top of that.

I've too many other things planned for the car to mess with that right now, but I'll come back to it if needed later. I really just wanted a 5spd for highway driving and road trips, when I found out that a PG was available I figured I may as well while it's out.

This is my commuter car so I'm not dumping a ton of cash into it right now. I have a 2010 wrx that receives the majority of my play money.

well the unit is still intact, but the spider gears blew up. it was basically a little wheel hop on a launch

Wow... they actually make those things for an E-series? That blows my mind! Talk about a small customer-base. They must be reverse compatible with something else.

You are probably right about that, but the way they code their part numbers makes it impossible to tell.

Any suggestions on which clutch kit to buy. I'm hoping to buy an eBay one, but there are a lot of choices.

im currently running the f1 6 puck miata clutch and chromoly flywheel with my b6t/kia trans. so far it has yet to let me down, i got about probably 3000 miles on it with a couple launches on the street with it. the total kit was like 370?
