  • B6 swap questions

    Howdy y'all.

The carby motor in my festiva is losing compression. I'm considering the B6 swap. Right now I don't have internet access at home, so I haven't done all the searching for answers. I will be looking for the answers, and I will post them back on this thread. If anyone is willing to help, I would appreciate it.

I have access to a 1990 323 with a complete B6. It has 178K on the odometer and an automatic tranny. I plan on using a 5 speed manual. I think I'll strip this 323 of the harnesses, the manifolds, dizzy, ECU, etc.

Does anyone know if '90 323 uses a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) that connects the speedometer to the ECU?

Does the auto tranny send a signal to the ECU?

The '90 323 has a speedo cable just like the festiva. The automatic transmission is electronically controlled though, it has it's own computer.

The B6 will bolt up to your stock transmission, but wiring all the EFI jargon is going to be... fun?

Ideally, you'd obtain an FI Festiva engine harness and begin conversion to FI before you do the swap. Then you'd need a 323 MTX ECU to run the whole thing.

Looks like you're going to attempt to use the 323 wiring harness to run most of your Festiva, but I doubt you'll want to use the ATX ECU. Not saying you couldn't mod it, but I think that will be more difficult than necessary.

I'd get an MTX ECU and a three pin TPS or TB with a three pin TPS if I were you. That should make things a bit easier no matter how you go. (I think you can rewire a four pin TPS but I wouldn't want to. I'd just grab another TB off a 5 speed Protege like I did for my first swap, because my B6 came from an ATX 323.)

        Just my opinion...

ugh having the hardest time getting a tps for my protege engine. I have a weird throttle body that other proteges and mx-3 do not have. Instead of a shaft that sticks out it has two little pigears that match up. I have to get a new TB because of this. Delaying my running car for at least another wek.

MAKE SURE YOUR TB HAS A SHAFT ON THE END, if it doesnt pull that thing off and get another TB to put on when you buy your engine. So many headaches because of this.
