So..I wanted a CAI, but I heard a lot of rumors and opinions about them, I don't know what's true and what's not, seems to be quite a bit of opinion and speculation regaurding cold air/cone filters.

I, not having unlimited funds, put this together, gross cost being around 35$ filter and all. Some day I aspire to replace the stock plastic intake piping, but it was good enough for the engineers so it'll work for me, for now.

Still need to finish the box, and it will be supplied with fresh air comming from the gap between the bumper up thru the bottom of the box with 2 1/2" flexpipe.

It's not touching any pulleys or belts, and the hood closes w/o touching. It will be bolted down using existing mounts from the old air box, also making a mount to hold the MAF still with some scrap metal.

Always ISO feedback, I should get it finished in the next couple days. Lemme know what you guys think..

That one doesn't flow enough air for a Festiva. You better get a bigger one. Looks nice tho.

Haha..good thing I drive an aspire!

It's not really going to be "pretty" ..at least I don't think it will be, but I'm hoping it will be functional, this car needs all the help it can get. If 35$ will buy me 2-3 mpg, it will pay itself off in...6 fuel UPS a monthx1.50=9$a month so 35/9= 4 months?..lol (based off fuelly statistics)

I finished up the box and ended up running a 3" flex pipe down behind my bumper as the air supply, its barely visible at all unless you stick your head down there, im satisfied with how it turned out, ive got about 12 bucks in the box for glue and all, i got the flex pipe from an old project or it woulda been a little more.

I think I may be running a little lean, not really sure what can be done about that, maybe bigger injectors? I dunno.. its definately given me a little extra pep tho, you can tell a difference from sucking that engine heat.

Hey, you're right, that IS an Aspire!

What did you do about the little rubber hose that fits into the plastic piece after the MAF? I've been thinking about an aftermarket filter too, but didn't know how to deal with that hose.

The vacuum hose comming from behind the engine? I cut a hole in the back of the box slightly bigger than the hose itself, and used the foam protector to stuff in with it to be airtight. Ill see if i can get better shots of it posted soon..

If i remember right mine wasnt even hooked up at all with the stock setup.. who knows maybe its the cause for my engine running lean? I just installed a vacuum gauge, after a few days i might try to do something else with it and see if it changes anything.

Im not really too sure if the little sensor thing is even in a good spot, i might try rigging it up somehwere else too..just to see if i get different results.

You should heat wrap the whole intake tube so the heat from the exhaust manifold doesnt cook the intake pipe and cause your cool air to be warm before it gets sucked into the engine. You would probably notice a diffrence by doing that too.

I believe that stuff is called coroplast. The aero-modders use it for their projects, its the "election sign" material. I didnt pick the color, it picked me.. that was a piece of scrap the place had laying around for cheap so i got it. Coulda been worse! I was thinking about wrapping the intake.. i might do that later but right now im waiting to see how the intake is going to hold up, and if its staying where it needs to be instead of getting blown around..its just flexpipe.

In the winter months I bet your mpg will drop. I made one for my 94 a few years ago but I made new piping and used a KN filter. Here's the guy I sold it to. If you want to flow some more air you could remove the screen in the maf.. but be careful doing so!

Mpg's always drop in the winter! But my fuelly is pretty much all from last winter (cold season while i was driving anyway, end of winter/fall) so its a good baseline for determining if this is actually doing any good at all once winter rolls around, which is happening alot faster than id like. I haven't posted a fuelly log since around the first month of summer, havent been doing full fill ups and got lazy with the numbers =(

That piping looks good... It's just a cone filter on the end of it tho, no air box..?

Ive seen those little valve cover filters at advance..are they really worth buying or just for looks?

It's a KN cone filter right behind the passenger light. Should get alot of outside air right there. They only reason for the little filter is I didn't want to drill another hole. If you run a warm air intake your mpg won't drop in the winter.

hmmm, i've always heard the colder the air the better it is.. we'll find out when the weather turns, i'll get some fuel logs like this, and if I don't like the numbers i'll take the top off the box (or just remove it it's just 2 bolts holding it in..)

anyway, I got some pics up! made them into a "colage" of sorts, way easier than uploading each pic individually.
