  • Holley-weber escort carb on 88 1.3 5spd

Got the carb on and started it. Haven't found out how to get the electric choke to work yet so we tied open the choke plates, it's 75 here. Idles fine once it warms up [no choke] but pops back out the carb when you kick in the secondary, maybe it still needs some choke. Wondering if the egr valve is still effecting anything since we took all the vac lines off the manifold and capped the ports, using only one vac line from the carb to the dist.
The exhaust smells odd, wondering if the cat might be clogged?

I would remove the EGR, and cap it with a metal plate, of aluminum or steel, and a gasket.

Have you hooked the original choke wire to the the new carbs choke? I put a crimp-on connector on the choke wire that would fit the new choke. I think it is a 1/4 spade connectior.

A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something.

Got the choke to work on the escort carb

Starts much better with the choke working. It still spits back a little if you punch it.

The choke is there just so that it will run without stalling until the engine warms up. After that the choke should come off completely and be wide open so that the engine won't stumble when you stomp on the gas. It shouldn't take longer than about 4 or 5 minutes to get to operating temperature in Florida. Only race car drivers don't use chokes. They want no extra weight and nothing to impede the air flow going into the engine. They are happy to keep their foot on the gas pedal at high rpms, until the engine warms up. They are also not concerned with the price of gas.

Verify idle mixture is set correct.Verify float level is set correctly. If it still does it try working it out with your timing. Then you can start playing with the pump cam & squirters. Good luck,it takes some patience to do what engineers have been doing for consumers all these years :p

                    I would check the following.
                    1-timing
2-dist cap is clean at point of contact
                    3-firing order
                    4-plugs

normally a choke wont make it backfire. if ythe choke is screwd up you will normally see odd idles and wont rev to quick.

have you ran this motor before swaping the carb?

It only spits back if you jab it. If you do a normal takeoff it's fine.

do you have a return line from the carburetor?

Sorry, don't know about a return line. The only lines on it now are the gas line from the fuel pump and a vac line to the disty. It will accelerate smoothly if you take off normally, only spits back if you tromp on it. We did advance it bit by bit which improved it, then backed off a little when it got worse.

would you say its a backfire like a loud pop or a burp/stumble.

Try opening the idle mixture screw a little at the back (firewall side) of the carb.
                              You gonna race that thing?
