Okay I found some pics from many years ago, this was the auto I pulled out of my parts car. Not sure if the pics help, lol
I think it's the differentials that are so problematic on these. I've seen several which have appeared to lost the bearings on the side & eat into the case

I know where one of the G4A-HLs is... along with a decent looking B6. Unfortunately, no money lol or else Babystiva would become not only the first carb'd auto, but the first carb'd auto 4-speed

From my reading of all that was posted here, my understanding is that the most practical 4 speed auto swap would be the unit from the 1989 323. It was a four speed lockup auto but had no computer controls.
I think the theory goes that you would just need to fit it into the engine bay with appropriate mounts and get it hooked up. Then compare pinouts from the ECUs, if the manual is different from the auto.
There may be more, but supposedly that's what the undocumented swap used.

I can vouch for the trans blowing up for no reason. My '91 323 was driving calmly down the road and lost all output from the trans. Sounds like someone's grinding up pop tabs in a blender now.

It came mated to the B6 DOHC
