From my reading of all that was posted here, my understanding is that the most practical 4 speed auto swap would be the unit from the 1989 323. It was a four speed lockup auto but had no computer controls.
I think the theory goes that you would just need to fit it into the engine bay with appropriate mounts and get it hooked up. Then compare pinouts from the ECUs, if the manual is different from the auto.
There may be more, but supposedly that's what the undocumented swap used.

'89L "Muttstiva," now a storage bin, future trailer project

Okay I found some pics from many years ago, this was the auto I pulled out of my parts car. Not sure if the pics help, lol
I think it's the differentials that are so problematic on these. I've seen several which have appeared to lost the bearings on the side & eat into the case1991 Mercury Capri XR2 "GTXR2" BPT Swapped AWD Conversion

Is it only the auto trans that does this, or do the manuals have the same problem? In love with a MadScientist!:thumbright:

Not sure. Like I said, I think it has its own computer module - I'll try to verify. The ECU AFAIK only manages the engineSome people like to read fiction,I prefer to read repair manuals. Weird I know-
