A correct & properly adjusted recirc/bypass valve can do just this. At idle it will allow air to flow around the turbo into the intake, and will do so until it starts to provide boost.

The stock B6T bypass valve functions in this manner, which is why it's impossible to vent it to atmosphere (it is open at idle)

It's effect is also negligible in my experience

Why not just go MS, you can do an electronic boost controller and just have two maps... one for a "spirited daily driver" and the other for at the track?

Because it costs even MORE money!!!!!

I plan MS eventually. Hell, I plan a lot eventually. But for now I'm still running a stock B3 with nothing in the update department but an explorer fuel filter, cartridge fuses, and escort mirrors. XD

I'm starting my new job soon though, so that should help a little.

MS isn't that expensive if you build it yourself. I picked mine up for $200 and made a pnp setup with some help from a buddy of mine. hardest part is getting a connector out of a stock ECU for the jumper harness.
