Ok I am still looking for a diesel engine to do a swap. Tough to find.

Let me ask this. How much hp and/or torque would one need in a festy. It would need to be a good driver. Highway speeds.

I know the stock engine was at 63 hp and it got the car out of the way on the freeway, but how much would be enough.

Found one with 36 and 88 LBS/FT. Not sure if I can find a used one though. At $6000 this is a but much to test with.

i would go with a minimum of 40hp and at least 3700 rpm redline. the one you describe would do well with a turbo and higher rated valve springs for a higher rpm limit.
    Trees aren't kind to me...

    currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

Ha I was just on that site.

My question was in reference to a Kohler engine, but now I see a Kubota 2.2 for sale locally. AND there seems to be other options as well.

I was so stuck on finding a Mazda engine I never saw the forest.

Buy a tractor and take the engine then part it out? Just a thought..

if you get a kohler get the 3cylinder diesel. we use them on some debris blowers at work... they wind up decent and run really smooth. I think it is a 40 horse engine.

The Cummims has a huge power opportunity though.

                and weighs a TON!

good luck getting the cummins under the hood and not twisting the body into a pretzel.

I was recently looking at a 94 VW turbo diesel setup. If anything this would be the way to go size-wise since a transmission is already there and front hub and wheels are 100mm spacing and 13 inch and similar in layout to what we already have. Little or no electronics either. The amount of work to do such a thing would be substantial but well within the realm of possibility when compared to fanciful suggestions of sliding in a 650 pound rear-wheeler Cummins 4B.

The VW axles are hollow, you cut them, bush them, slide half the festy axle inside, weld.

The non turbo VW is about 50hp, the car weighs 2200 or so (Golf 2)

I have several clean 1.5l diesel (mk1 rabbit) cores with pump/injectors, theyre 48hp iirc. And have 4speeds.

If there are no big hills in your commute, you could easily get away with 25-30hp with proper gearing.

Mercedes OM617 5 cylider turbo. Bulletproof motor, will outlast the festiva body you put it on. Only thing... you'd have to make it rear wheel drive.

A 617, it'd have to be RWD, then still have the firewall moved back, and thr engine/trans still weighs nearly as much as the empty car!

Yes was looking at the 40 hp Kubota.

I say you contact a local JDM importer and price out a Mazda PN engine/trans, that way you'd have the same setup as FB71 and the swap wouldn't need much custom work
