  • Phenolic Intake Manifold or TB spacers?

I was briefly visiting one of the Escort forums and was reminded of phenolic spacers. Long ago, I had read about them for the Mitsu 3.0 V6 engine (like I wanted to put in my Aries).

They're supposed to provide an insulating barrier between the head and the intake bodies. Keeping the intake (and thus, intake charge, I presume) cooler will boost power a bit. I saw a figure (or estimate?) of about 10hp on the Escort forum. Not sure which engine though.

The question is one of price vs. effectiveness. Plus, those of us who are building up or rebuilding an engine would probably have it easier since we'd be prepping the block outside the car and could more easily lengthen the manifold studs for installation of the thicker spacer (what, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch or so?).

What do you think and how could we go about getting these if they don't already exist?

Of course I'm talking about the newer B6, but perhaps one semi-finished spacer blank could be used for both older and newer B6 blocks. Maybe even the B3? That could keep the cost down through a larger purchase.

On my b6 the intake manifold doesn't get all that hot. After driving a ways on the freeway it's only warm to the touch.

Wow. I should feel mine too.

Okay everyone, go for a drive and feel up your manifolds!

Sorry, I been up all night.

Bypass the tb coolant lines and it will run cooler. If you made the spacers out of plastic to get the heat transfer down is about the only way it would help. TB spacers I thought didn't have much effect of efi's... on carbed a whole other story though.

I just re-bypassed the festiva's lines today, probably do the aspire's tomorrow. I wonder if it would help any in mpg? So the only heat transfer is from where the holes in blocks allow the coolant to touch the intake manifold?

I know one thing for sure....TB spacers are good paper weights. That's about it.
