  • E-Series disassembly/reassembly thread

So after cracking a case due to an axle removal failure I am in need of a case swap. I just need the top half. I have the parts and have had a few e-series transmissions apart. I already had removed my cracked case and have my new half and am in process of reassembly. Got confused on the shift shafts and searched for a decent picture assembly thread today and came up empty handed. I know I can figure it out and thought while doing so I could make a e-series reassembly thread for the do-it-yourselfers on here who may need that extra picture book direction. Im sure most of you can disassemble the e-series, so the hard part is reassembly and may not always occur on the same day. I will be starting a step by step reassembly this week with pic by pic steps starting from an empty case to complete installation ready. Anyone need popcorn?

I don't eat popcorn but I'll be sitting down with a "liter 'o' cola" patiently waiting the start of the show. I have an E-series rebuild coming up in my future

If it's a 5-speed, don't lose or forget to install the little pin that goes in the bottom of the 5th-reverse shift shaft. It looks like a short fat needle bearing.
          You gonna race that thing?

Once you click on a pic, go to the upper right corner of the pic, and a magnification tool will pop up for you.

after disassembling your transmission, clean your parts and case.

Step one: Lay your parts out and get organized

Step 2: Install differential, make sure your side gears are in place properly and are not pitted or chipped.

Step 3: Put your countershafts together where the gears mesh and install carefully so you don't damage your input shaft seal.

Step 3: Install the reverse shaft and gear. Kind of a no brainer here, line up the reverse shift fork with the ring in the gear and slide it in aligning the key on the shaft to the notch in the case.

Step 4: Install the shift forks. Set them in this position and then i will show you which way the shift shafts go in.

Install third shift shaft and then install your shift fork actuator. I take it apart because it goes in easier and its only a c-clip to take out.
