The auto's in the 88-89 323's were a 4 speed auto and htchbck has one of those tranny's
From what he says they are hydraulically controlled with a cable going from the trans to the throttle body for the kickdown
I will soon be doing a B6T swap using a 4 speed auto, full pics and write up will follow
1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor
1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)
If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

yer its bs ay, thats how i stuffed my old 1.3L by doin highway drives to much. u say 88-89 323's have a 4sp auto? but u said it has a kickdown cable. im using a carby setup and i dont have the piece where the cable attaches thats why i was wondering if the was a 4sp auto with the vacuum modulator kickdown.

When you post what RPMs you are doing at whatever speed, you also need to specify Aspire or Festiva ATX and your tire size. Aspires have a lower final drive (higher numerically).
There'll be a difference between 145/80-12 (or 165/70-12) and 175/70-13. The larger tires will lower your RPMs.
Karl'93GL "Prettystiva" ticking B3 and 5 speed, backup DD; full swaps in spring!
'91L "AquaMutt" my '91L; B6 swap/5 speed & Aspire brakes, DD/work car
'92L "Twinstiva" 5sp, salvage titled, waiting for repairs...
'93GL "Luxstiva," '94 B6 engine & ATX; needs overhauled
'89L "Muttstiva," now a storage bin, future trailer project

As for the original question, here in the states we had 4 speed autos available in the '88-'89 323 hatchbacks and sedans. Don't know if you had the same in Aus though.
And Damkid is correct, they are hydro controlled via a throttle cable, so not actually vac controlled but still the same basic principal. Not computer controlled at leastLast edited by htchbck; 01-23-2012, 02:31 PM.No festiva for me ATM...
