  • B6 vs B3

Stupid question # 2 ( today). How can you tell a B6 sohc from a B3 by looking at its exterior?

Water inlet (where the bottom rad hose connects to water pump) is not long and curvy like on a B3. The exhaust mani is longer than on a B3. If its a '90+ B6 then the valve cover is much more rounded than a B3. If its a pre '90 B6 then the dizzy will look like a carbie B3 dizzy, with vac lines going to it. Also, somewhere on the head should be cast B61K (I think) and on the B3 I believe it says B301? Those are the ones off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more, its been a long day at work lol, still 5 more hours of my other job to go.
    No festiva for me ATM...

There is a heavy "ear" sticking out as part of the block right in the area where the distributor, starter, and bell housing come together on the firewall side that is machined smooth on top and stamped with either B3 or B6. Depending on the amount of rust on the block it may be hard to read.
            You gonna race that thing?

The B6 will have "61K" embossed on the head just below the valve cover, between the two center sparkle plugs. At least my gen 2 B6 does.

If your going Junkyard looking just try to find an engine that looks like a B3 that isn't in a Festiva.
