  • Oil Pump mods?

I bought a new oil pump for my B6. Its very stiff to turn the impeller, I'm hoping its just due to being new and dry, but I plan on disassembling it to check it out. Anyone know of any factory casting or clearance issues? Any mods to improve performance, like chamfering and polishing the oil feed passages?

That is the difference between Caddy oil pumps and chevy oil pumps on the newer engines..they interchange, one pumps more oil.

Real world.. can't tell the difference but providing unobstructed oil supply makes a huge difference. Having the oil sump too close to the bottom of the pan will ruin an oil pump in a matter of minutes. Seize??..no, just the ability to provide full relief valve pressure at idle. Put in a new oil pump and the pressure is back. Provide unobstructed oil supply and it stays back.

Why do you need more oil flow? Because of screw ups in clearance?? Did you add a turbo or a oil cooler ? If not then you need attention to detail from engineering principles not more flow.

If you added a turbo you need to look at the entire system. Do you need jets to oil cool
the piston?? How much more oil does the turbo itself take? Will the soot plug a undersized oil sump? Will the oil return from the turbo dump soot near the screen? What needs to be changed to accommodate the soot from a turbo lube return line??

An oil pump like anything marketed for retail is a compromise of performance and reliability. You can make it better. You can make it pump more. you can make it last longer. Do you need to if something else will always fail first?

The perfect engine destroyed by headgasket failure......

Give that pump a good big screen and good cool oil. Improve passages to offer pressure at lower oil temps. Make sure oil leaks, coolant leaks and cheap gaskets do not fail first.

Do not shop for lubes or parts based on price..

No....no turbo. The clearances on all mains and rods are all per my specifications, I polished the crank to achieve exactly where I want it. Just on the mid-to-loose side of the factory range. Bone stock, they were on the tight side of specs...borderline too tight. I pay a lot of attention to the oiling system on every motor I build. All oil return passages are deburred, oil ports chamfered, main saddle feeds lined up with the bearing holes...you get the idea. Like you said, factory castings can be off. I will check all the clearances in the oil pump. Just wondering if anyone has ever messed with one before.

you can shim the bleed off to raise the pressure a bit... and porting the inlet and stuff i guess wouldnt hurt...
