I just recived my b6 pistons back from swaintech, they are pretty! I had them do their "gold coat" top coat and their "pc-9" skirt coating. Grand total with shipping..... $228.88! If your thinking of doing a build read up on their site, there is A LOT of very technical articles and magazine excerpts that back what they claim. I hope they do what they claim. www.swaintech.com

That's beautiful man! Shame it doesn't have 4 valve reliefs, but to each their own! How much air are you gonna push thru that engine?

Iceracer has used some of their coatings and to my knowledge hasn't blown up his B6 Turbo aspire yet.

Well it was on 14 psi with a t25, stock re-ring on a 200k block and pistons. It held good for about a month, before the tired old bottom end, so with their coatings and a fresh bore over, we'll see what happends!

I'm intrigued! Sometimes I think I missed out on some cool/unique setups by just going with a BP off the bat.

I wanted to try a Z5 bottom end with a B6D head for this AWD build but I had a free BP basically after I partially parted my pro.

Well, that's the biggest reason I started this build oh so many years ago. Everyone does the B6t and the BP+T, but you don't really see much sohc love these days. Economy builds or convenient fun swaps aside, beyond a cam, maybe a header, the sohc really hasn't been pushed(with a few cases aside). For the weight difference and the size, it really all boils down to flow. A sohc can flow just as good as a dohc, but for some reason is generally neglected if a dohc option is avalible(most manufaturers included). Before the compression dropped, I took a friend for a ride that built a BP+T protege on 10 psi with a 50 trim t3/t4, he pushed that car pretty hard on the regular basis, but was shocked by the power that may baby little b6 was putting out. He was pretty sure mine was faster. So after I get into my house, it will be back up and fighting, I'm hoping for hight 13s/ low low 14s.

After less than 20k I had a loss of compression on #2&3, smoking and excessive blowby. #2 had 90psi dry and 172psi wet, #3 had 70psi dry and 185psi wet. Tore the head off to diagnose, and this is what I found. Not very happy right now.

I can't tell much from the pic on my iPhone, are there holes in the pistons?
Is this the "new" motor with coated pistons, or you're just now tearing down the old motor?

Oouch man that SUCKS.. looks like the antifreeze leak did a number on the coating.

What's the cylinder walls look like? Is the compression loss just because of the antifreeze drying out the cylinders? Looks like that block will probably need decked now too to get those pitts back out.

I'd probably be on the hunt for a known good engine lol..

Ouch, that is a LOT of heat only on one side. Retarded ignition, advanced cam ? The other side does not even show normal heat, its like it all is focused right at the edge of the piston!?

Never had a antifreeze leak. It was running great till about 3 weeks ago. It had just the tiniest puff of oil smoke on start. Also it seemed to want to have spark knock, where as it never had at the timing settings it had the whole time this engine has been in the car (2 weeks before madness). The intake side has seemed to take all the abuse. It almost looks as though the fuel mix has eaten off the coating. The small holes in the center were there out of the box. The head and block mating surfaces aswell as the head gasket (cometic) look great. If you look closely at the pattern of the bare sections, it follows the shape of port swirl. I haven't pulled them out to see how the skirt coatings have held up, but it looks as though the top coat, erroded and causes that side of the pistons to overheat locally causing the rings or possibly the pistons themselves to fail. The walls look great, they all had beautiful cross hatching and a few very minor vertical scratches, that don't catch your nail.
