  • bp questions...

well i took the head off my bp today, and found dirt packed on top of #1 piston. how it got there i have no idea, but it is what it is. also some rust pitting in #2 and 3, so i think i'm gonna take it down and have it bored.

now for the question--where would yall suggest getting oversize pistons? also i had considered trying to get a little more compression out of it, but i'd really like to be able to run regular gas in it. is the bp pretty much maxed out stock or can you get some more without starting to knock?

any other tips to get a little more power out of it while i've got it down would be appreciated as well. Thanks yall!
    Andy

I refrained from posting because people jump me for things I say, but nobody else is willing to add any feedback here, so this is my opinion, and it's just that, take it as you will.

I'd just try to get the shop to hone the cylinders (5-10$ a hole) so you won't have to get oversized pistons and rings. You can clean those aluminum pistons up spotless and shiney as new with dawn power dissolver in about an hour (2-3 coats) aluminum doesn't rust...depending on the rust damage to the cylinder walls, there's no way to know if it will have to be bored or not until they start honing...that I know of.

I've heard shaving/milling the head brings the torque curve back a bit, like instead of peaking at 4500, you would peak sooner?? but it boosts your compression ratio, which is low end torque. I shaved mine 20 thousandths but I'm also going to need 93 octane and megasquirt. I'm saying this because I put the head on with a stock gasket and don't have any issues with interference. I wouldn't recommend going much more than you have to, but definately take some off to resurface the head. If anything, your knock box should do its' job right?!

If you can, get new valve stem seals and a 3 way valve job done, seal up the possible leaks from the combustion chamber/cylinders and enjoy a brand new engine. I did that+milling, and they put the new valve stem seals on for me for like 110$?

If your on a budget, I've heard of people reusing old bearings, mine weren't cheap (clevites) and they took 2 weeks to get.

For a stock/NA motor, I would think port/gasket matching the intake and/or exhaust would help at least a little. From what I hear, these air pumps are all about the airflow.

I don't know how much it would cost, and I wouldn't do it my self to my engine, but smoothing the intake and exhaust ports and combustion chamber inside the head may help. I was debating it, but there's just no way I'm trusting myself with a dremel tool on that particular piece of metal, yet.

Just my 2 cents.. hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about can interject their ideas that are probably better.

I appreciate your input, and I've been watching your build thread, looking good! I thought about tryin to hone it out, but theres a few places that don't think will come out smooth. I may get me a hone and try that first though.

I was definitely planning on gettin the head worked with valve seals and all. I really REALLY don't want to put it in the car and find it using oil cuz I didn't do it right the first time... I will put bearings in too since ive got it down this far anyway. The guy who had it before had apparently been through it before, but then he let it sit outside with #1 spark plug out of it... Stupid people

I must have missed the first part of the story. What led up to the finding the dirt packed in the cylinders?

I bought the engine from a guy off Craigslist. That's about all lol. I'm not really sure how it got in there

My first B6 swap engine--a '94--had several hoses with crap in them which looked like insect nesting activity. Gave me a reason to take more apart and clean it up I guess.

The bp has amazing aftermarket, if your cylinders are good there are unlimited replacement option in standard bore. You can leave bottom end alone and concentrate on just the head and see gains there too. Of course plenty of members here have buttoned up a dirty bp, changed nothing, and boosted it as is.
