  • LSD DIFF parts? are they worth it?

saw this on ebay and thought:- is it really worth it?

    http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NjIwWDY1MA==/$(KGrHqN,!jEE7blB4n0(BPGj3Zvncg~~60_12.JPG

the reason i say this is cause i have read a few reviews over the net and people have claimed that these have actually slipped (as opposed to making things "Limited Slip")

Is there someone out there who actually fabricates these and makes a better version of this as i have seen some of these go for like 300+ postage (on top, not included) which still slip.

I used to run a phantom grip, the only thing it really made a difference with was the diff pin, it really helped to remove it while driving.... Replaced trans and sold the phantom grip, then got an Mfactory LSD

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Hmmm, I've never really found a need to remove my diff pin while driving. But to each his own I guess
        No festiva for me ATM...

I've been told I should install one of these phantom grips. You guys are saying removing the diff pin makes it drive better, but what's the different feel your talking about?

            **facepalm**

Lol you need the diff pin in order to keep your diff in working condition.... I was being sarcastic, my old phantom grip caused my diff pin to come out while driving and tore a nice hole in my transmission

Lol sorry, I'm trying to get better at the whole engine/worksmanship stuff. When I initially bout our rallycar all I knew was oil/tire changes. Been tearing into motors recently, but haven't messed with transmissions/steering and the likke yet. Basically I was told to get a limited slip but I'm not sure if its worth it or not, just been told to get 1 put in.

I put one in my E series trans and there is a difference. Is it like a $1,400 Quaif or a $600 Mfactory, no of course not. This was designed to be a simple, inexpensive "clutch style" unit as opposed to the other two "helical" styles I mentioned. There are other styles as well, and even other more sophisticated clutch styles, but none designed to fit an e series trans. Phantom grip makes them for many other different transaxles, and they're not ALL "drop in units either". The one for the E series requires machining of side gears, pinion gears as well as a little off the phantom grip itself! The one for some of the dodge neons are just drop in though.
Here are some pictures of what the side and pinion gears look like before and after the machining work I had done to them. Additionaly, I widened and deepened the phantom grip spring pockets to accomodate even stronger springs (die springs) than phantom grip's strongest optional spring offering. I've also had all of this stuff cryo treated at 300 Below, in Decataur Il. Great people to work with by the way. Additionally, I have had this trans apart again several years and miles later (for the four shaft bearings, had done the diff bearings when I did the phantom grip), and am pleased to report no adverse wear whatsoever! I was actually expecting way more metal on the magnet I had obviously cleaned when I had put the PG in, but to my surprise, there was almost none! I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF exclusively, but Redline synthetic in my tranaxles that require gear lube.

If you do decide to go this way, remember to degauss the parts you machine.
                Nobody will tell you this

Damkid, I have a stock 1991 Ford Festiva, would it fit the transmission or is for the g-series only, the Mfactory LSD that is?

In the Taurus sho world , the PG is a big NO-NO.

It will tear up your tranny before your next oil change. Even if you are careful.

Aren't the SHO's prone to diff failure anyway?
