hi there guys, i cant fidn a 5-speed festiva for sale, i might have to settle with a auto, anyone happen to have a list of parts needed to make the swap?
Ok, i just finished the swap, the left side motor mount for auto or 5-speed is the same,
also, comparing the crossmember, and trans mounts they looked to be the same too, (although i did get a 5-speed crossmember attached to my 5-speed trans from the junkyard and used that.
axles are different, very very very similer, looks like they have different collars on the trans side and bigger cv joints on the trans side too.
the biggest pain in the whole swap is the pedals!, Im a fat bastard and it was like impossible to get under there, I had my brother and freind help,
It was like pulling teeth getting the pedals in and out, you have to take the bolt off the bottom of the steering columm and unbolt the columm completly to move it around to make room to squeeze the pedal setup in and out.
Another pain in the *ss was swapping the b3 ecu with the b6 ecu, even with the pedals out of the car, holy crap!, you need to hire a little asian boy to get in there..
I would suggest anyone doing the swap to just pull the dash, its going to save your back from twisting all around and save your hands, its like razor blades under there!
wiring... the wiring is in the harness for the automatic, you just need to run it to the clutch switches, there are two of them, i was tired of squeezing under the dash so i just jumped this and taped it back into the harness. You would have to be a moron to start the car in gear, and hey, if you break down in trafficc you can just hit the starter to move out of the way
backup lights are easy too, there are 2 green wires, just cut the connector off the auto, splice it onto the 2 green wires on the 5-speed and plug it in.
well thats all folks!, thank the festiva desingers for making the cars so "plug and play", you cant just swap a auto for a 5-speed so easily in many other cars like this one.
Thought I might revive this old post with some new blood. I am doing a auto to manual swap on my 90 Festiva GT. (read modified L Plus) And want to document my progress and just don't know were else to do it. SO, here goes. Thus far I have pulled a 5 speed trans from a J/Y Gl. I took the trans, cross member, backup light switch w/5'' of harness, speedo drive, pedal assm, cable, engine plate and flywheel. I left the cv's and clutch as I get a killer discount from work and want new parts anyway. I have cleaned and dressed all of the parts and now sit in wait for the car to be delivered in about an hour. I will be removing the auto tonight which looks to be much harder than the manual so next update may take awhile as I work 50+ a week and don't have a computer at my place (I'm techno deprived) and have zero free time after the cars and work. Thanks folks.
..oh yea, i got the starter as well. And just got the car, and lo and behold it is an a/c car! It has 190+ miles but the inside looks almost new, except for the pass seat belt is broke so i need to find one. The a/c does mean that the 1.8 swap is on hold for now. I dont want to lose all that sweet sweet cool air.
Is it a direct bolt on or do i have to fab a bracket? I though there would be some clearance issues.
UPDATE: Removed the dash thinking I had to take out the heater core to remove a cable that ran from the ignition switch to the shifter, no need. Big wast of time but still very educational. Seems the booster from the auto car will work fine with the manual but I think I may end up with a firmer pedal due to the lower vacuum. So the pedal cluster is in all of the old auto hardware is removed, now I am going to remove the old trans and wait for payday to buy the new parts. This is turning out to be way easyer than expected.
YEA RIGHT. The side engine brakects are different from auto to man. Another trip to the yard. My j/y cross member was bent but i did not see this till the trans was in. Removed the member and am using the one from the auto, trouble lineing up the rear mount. have not even tryed to touch the wireing except to move the starter harness back. Have to replace both control arms all 4 tie rods and brake master, rebuild calipers and swap out a rotten sway bar. Shewt I need more days off but what fun it is...
