  • Sorry if old news: 626 Transmission?

    Hey All:

I was reading on another forum that the 626 transmission is marginally stronger then the g series, The bell housing should be the same as the festiva correct me if im wrong

Here is the thing: I found a super cheap FE3 out of a Sportage on kijiji.... There has to be another stronger transmission readly available that can bolt into a festiva.

We need a trans sticky thread...

The 626 uses a Gtype... unless you are talking about the 626 GT - that uses an Htype, which is marginally stronger. However, the bolt patterns are all for the F-series motors and will not work with a B series engine

The FE3 I think uses a b-series bolt pattern, but I could be wrong on that

well, if FE3 uses a B series then lets get this ball rolling! And if it uses an F series bolt pattern then lets get this ball rolling! either way there is a way to bolt it up. The 626/mx6/probe diff even has the same splines as a Capri/EGT/ProtegeLX. (I am using an inner CV from an MX6 in my car, it's identical to a 6 ball Xr2 unit). Then laugh at the BP crowd for their tiny little motors, while you stare over the huge bulge in your hood to clear the tall block!

The problem with the FE3 into a festy is it's an inch longer than the BP...

the fe3 will bolt to the 626 N/A trans or the 626 gt trans... the gt is a stronger trans, but its huge.... the 626 N/A with the f2 motor in it uses a g series with a f series bell housing on it... i was planning on doing a fe3 with the 626 N/A trans but no money in the bank right now... you will have to get custom axles made or swap in the 323 gt diff to get the right spline count to use 323gt axles or maybe you can make the 626 or escort gt axles work...

its gonna take a bit of work, but i think it will pay off BIG TIME!!! the fe3 is a wickid motor and puts out good power for its size... you should be able to get it to run on a BP ecu if you want... my plan was to use gsxr carbs and the factory dist from a 88/89 carb festiva...

Someone do an FE3 swap before I do :p

The axle splines are the same. I used an mx6 inner cv joint on my drivers side in tweak. They are almost always in better condition than the Capri ones.
The Xr2 axle setup should work with a custom intermediate shaft bracket.

Using this logic, i just helped a friend swap an fe3 into his miata, used stock miata gear box..

Then, regardless the 626 GT transmission should bolt up to a miata/festy/b6t block along with the fe3 block?

                  POW!

I gather this transmission should work in a festiva, its stronger and isn't that uncommon....

the FE3 will not bolt to a stock miata trans without a bellhousing swap. The 626 GT trans (htype) will NOT bolt to miata/festy/b6t/bp block...

                    FE3 info here: http://www.solomiata.com/FE3info.html

A true FE3 is going to be really hard to find, would have to come in through a JDM importer. They were not used domestically. There is a watered down version of the engine used in the Kia Sportage but it's not a transverse engine, so intake/exhaust manifolds are all wrong

You could compare the FE3/F2T trans to KL's, there's a G series tranny that bolts to them with a different bell housing but will not interchange with the B series engines/tranny's

Gah your right, i remember now he put a b2200 bell housing on the miata trans now.... And it was a 6 speed... and i know that much about the intake and exhaust manifolds, with a bit of porting the bp manifold works perfectly and as for intake manifold that shouldnt be to difficult.

just make a good header for it, and then stick some gsxr carbs on it.... there, all your intake and exhaust manifold problems are all gone

A buddy did that to his miata, itb's cams, and full exhaust the car dynoed at 146whp.

sure it was cheap, but the amount of work, swearing, and machining he had to "kissbutt" for: N/A only works if you have boat loads of cash

So this just in, i was only partially wrong... The FE3 bolts up to a 6 speed miata gear box. The holes are there just not drilled out on the bell housing. He only has 4 bolts holding on the trans though which i doubt is an issue.
