  • swapover fueltanks for more mileage?

Has anyone ever done a swapover for a bigger fueltank to get more mileage at all?

I'm considering the Mazda 323 as it has two more gallons and makes that 45 litres meaning more travel.

Just curious if anyone has done a swap and did it require any modifications?

Certainly 'more mileage' is what you're gonna get and not 'better mileage'. 2 gallons (if this is Imperial measure) is only 9 litres. At one kilgram per litre, plus the extra kilogram of gas tank material you'll be dragging around, adds up to 22 pounds. Much easier to just buy a plastic 2 gallon gas can with a decent spigot and use that on long trips. I did this for many years when travelling through the sticks in remote areas of central British Columbia. What's really nice about adding a known amount of fuel, and knowing your gas mileage, is that you can calculate almost to the mile how much further you can safely go when the tank is topped up. Gas gauges are notoriously inaccurate plus you also do not want to take a chance on running a fuel pump dry out in the bush.

The only issue I see with a larger tank is the only place for it to be added to is the lower portion, making it lower to the ground than the oe one.
I would love to have added capacity, been thinking about adding a feeder tank in the rear area behind the back seat.

yeah.. i wasn't too worried about how low it sits, unless it's going to put me in danger of having it hit the road.. but my whole thing was to get extra mileage, not improve mileage.. i don't think that the extra few litres would worry me as i drive relatively fast anyways and that would be chewed within a few kilometers (imperial measurement) but i figure a little more is a little more in terms of Km's

You could add a 30L fuel cell to your interior. Vent it outside, and pipe it through your fuel neck. Make it drain into your fuel tank. You just doubled your distance capabilities. You may even be able to drive across the whole continent on a tank...
