  • G5MR Transmission Mount questions...

Hi everyone - I have a new (to me) 93 Festiva with a BP + G5MR swap. I have been driving it for a bit to figure out any quirks the car has. The biggest one so far is the engine/tranny mounts.

I had an odd clunking noise start in the car that helped let me know that both tranny mounts had let go. Thank god for the subframe support!

So, my question is does anyone recognize the altered mount being used in this picture? The second one is showing the "welding" that was done to hold it all together. I have a bad feeling someone spot welded it to mock it up and forgot to finish it. I need to know what the piece with the rubber mount is from as it has almost separated completely and I need to find a new piece.

Here is a photo of the front mount. You can see where a piece has been (spot) welded to the top. And yes, it was held together with one bolt. I have since made a new piece up that uses both holes (Luckily the bottom hole wasn't damaged all the way through.) but I can see the bottom rubber is split and the angles don't look very stress friendly at all to me. Again, does anyone recognize the bottom rubber piece?

Now, that being said, should I consider going a different route for the mounts? I see some mention of modified mounts from an 02 Kio Rio? being used for the rear transmission mount. (near firewall) Is there some killer combo being used out there I should be doing?

Thanks for your time and any help you can give!

Anyone have any mounts for sale..?

I have been searching for awhile but I can't seem to find what I need. Lots of general and solid in depth info, but I'm kinda visual when it comes to learning. it would be awesome if there was a good buried guide that im not finding.

Would be very grateful if anyone could give me a push in the right direction. I have a 323 turbo cable transmission using 323 axles if that helps.

Can't seem to have any luck with the search function and the keywords "Kia" or "Rio"..? Anyone know anything about the viability of transmission mounts from that vehicle? (200?-0?) Last bump from me on this.

The front mount is similar. The rear not so much. The brackets are the problem.

Thanks for the reply! I have a wrecked 2002 Rio near me that I am going to try and check out.

I can make a solid mount, but I wanted to try and use something similar to what I had so I could keep some rubber to reduce vibration. I think I have seen the Escort GT rear mount mentioned by a few people - that may be the next try. (I realize I will need to modify it as well.)

Congrats on the BP Festi. Too bad about the mounts. Have you found this thread?

Mounts are quite a black voodoo, each set is unique and I double you can really make two exactly same sets...

My passenger side is the no-weld mount like the one from the BP swap manual - with the original escort mount upside down and a 1/4" angle bracket, that was the first mount I've made (while it was still with the original transmission)

My front mount was made from the original escort bracket - the piece which is bolted to the tranny. You can see it in my "door hinge" thread - . Just cut the lower part & weld plates which bolt to the round piece.

Your rear mount looks kinda like mine, I think you just need to re-weld these pieces. The trick is to tack while the mount & engine are on the car, and then take it apart and weld properly. My first mount has failed because of too much heat while welding - the rubber got separated from the plate, so for the 2nd try I was welding-waiting-welding-waiting.

Thanks Thered56 - Yeah, this seemed to be one of the best articles I could find. Has lots of good info, but I got a little lost on the rear transmission mount and what parts are being used in some of the posts.

THANK YOU!!! That's what I was needing! What mount did you modify for the rear mount? Was it an Escort Gt mount as well? Love the door-hinge idea, I can see that being used when I make the inevitable switch to a newer G25MR transmission.

If I recall everything correctly - yes, my rear mount it made of a part of original mount (the bracket piece which bolts to the gearbox) and part of festiva mount (the rubber & mounting bolt piece) - looks very similar to what you have

Please note that my radiator is outside of the car (if memory servers that's mostly because of my exhaust header shape) - I did not have the problem of packing everything under the hood.

Ok... thought I would follow up with what I have done. I used a gm/chev transmission mount
(http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=3.1108g) that lines up great with the stock festiva crossmember. All I needed to do was drill out the one square hole and it fits fine.

Now... this is the part where I had to get creative. Please don't laugh too hard as this is my first attempt at making a mount! I followed Russian's advice and took a measurement of the distance between my transmission bracket and the transmission mount with everything in the car. It is tricky as hell to work in that cramped space, so one good suggestion I read was to use spray foam to make a mould of the gap. For my project I just cut some cardboard to fit.

Once I had the distance figured out, I bent the top of the transmission mount back until it was the right distance from the top of my transmission bracket. (Lookout for those brake lines!) I then cut two pieces of angle iron and cut them to fit the proper spacing. I drilled a hole in both pieces and attached them to the mount with a bolt. I bent the top piece of angle iron in a vice in order to get the angle right. I then reinstalled everything to check the fit. Once I was happy, I tacked everything together with a mig while it was in the car. I then removed the bolts from the transmission mount and removed the crossmemeber. I welded my new mount all together then reinstalled in the car.

For a first try, I am happy it worked! I am a little worried as the car still seems to have a bit of a pull to the left. I will need to get the suspension checked, and I am also worried everything is sitting higher than it should be. What type of angle should my CV shafts have? Anyways, thanks for all the help from everyone!

Here is an image gallery of the mount. Please ignore the crappy welding, the pictures were taken after I tacked everything together in car.

Thanks man! I think I just needed to be told, as Russian said, mounts are quite a black voodoo! I was hoping to find a nice blueprint of an engine mount(s) I could copy. Being original isn't ever easy.

I was going to take the time to draw mine out, but I wanted to make sure they worked first. At this pace methinks it may be a while before I add an automatic SHO in the rear...
