  • 4 speed transmission questions turbo involved

hmmmmmm ok may be dumb questions but here it goes:

    1) were there any differences in the internals of the 4 vs 5 speed trans.... aside for the extra gear :highly_amused: are they stronger by any chance?

    2) with using a 4 speed with a turbo setup would there be an advantage of being able to stay in boost longer because of the gear ratios?

    -thank you that is all
-90 festiva - bp swap "relentless" (thanks matt) aspire swap, pacesetter, underdrive pulley
-90 festiva - surf blue (undetermined destiny) wanna keep but wifey says noooooooo

I would say they are no stronger than the 5speed.

I'm fairly certain the 1-4 gears are the same ratio as the 5 speed.

Festiva tranny's have longer gears than the G series but not as strong.

    Hope that helps a little

ok so.... i know i know this may be dumb but

      1>>>>>>>>>2>>>>>>>>3>>>>>>>>>4>>>>>>>>>>5 = 85
      1>>>>>>>>>>>>>2>>>>>>>>>>>3>>>>>>>>>>>>>4= 85

thats the way it looks in my head.... more boost between gears... still dumb i guess but im still curious?

nope.... all the numbers line up there Bobby... you just loose 5th. looks like this:

        1>>>>>>2>>>>>>3>>>>>>4(85)>>>>>>5(120)
        1>>>>>>2>>>>>>3>>>>>>4(85)

4 speed and 5 speed have different final drive ! Correct !
I currently know a b6d car that has been built with both 4 and 5 and 5 aspire and they all perform differently !
this has been talked about before and fb71 confirmed 4 and 5 festiva are different gearing .
New build on the way .

^ no, SAME final drive (pinion to ring gear tooth count are the same! for mid model '88-final production'93 manual transmissions)

there is the SMALLLLLLL chance that the 4 speed that was used was early model year '88 which all my reasearch shows what NOT an E series trans. the E series in the festy are the dame diff gearing. FSMs confirm the above statements.

Fsm , okay ! I have done both over again and they seem very dif ! I have installed the 5 speed festy and removed it to go back to the 4 speed for the simple reason of ratio and hill climbing (pulling) . I'm not arguing I'm expressing I have done this, facts ! If I'm wrong I'm wrong . It's a clear difference I changed from festy 5 to aspire 5 and back to original festy 4 speed , time to kill. I back to 4 speed for the performance hill climb power band thing.
New build on the way .

no, i'm down with there being a different 4 spd, but MOST will be of the E series veriety is all i'm saying.

i'm wondering if you could make a 4 spd with the aspire diff ...... hmmmm. i'm thinking yes.
