I have added a Thrush glasspack where the Festiva resonator went. It does seem to me to noticeably cut down on cabin NVH, especially at freeway speeds. I wish I had known to put one on my ATX, which needs it more than my 5 speeds!

I always get the smallest one with 2" ends (it's a bit larger than the stock resonator):

    I obviously recommend it.

Have never had a resonator and use only OEM-type mufflers. Cabin sounds and noise are quite acceptable and sometimes I even forget that the engine is running. I wonder if resonators are fashion gimmicks to make B3s sound like there is a powerful engine under the hood.

Back when I had a B6D Festy, I had a custom exhaust built for it. They didn't use a resonator, and it sounded obnoxious. After a resonator was plumbed in, it sounded good but not annoying anymore.

Pretty sure everything back of the cat is 1 1/2 inch. OEM downpipes from the engine to the cat for manuals was smaller than for auto until a few years ago when Walker decided no longer to sell the skinny pipes.

original Festy had a resonator behind the cat. Walker replacements omit this but others like Merit have the resonator.

Received the Merit Pipe and installed it. It's made with larger tube and the heat shields will not go back on. The stud for the middle hanger is not provided so will have to weld on one or just not use it. Since the pipe is bigger the front an back hangers will probably work okay. I'm a little concerned with running it with out the heat shields.

Whoo boy! The first thing that rusts off on northern cars are flimsy soup-can-material heat shields, so yeah when you ask about them on a Festy I do have to scratch my head. I don't have any anywhere except one that had to be removed because if was rattling around loose over top of the muffler quite a few years ago. Same goes for exhaust manifold shields but I figure they were only ever there to keep idiots from burning their fingers.
