  • Custom exhaust questions

I have been planning on getting my exhaust done when I swap my engine. I stopped in and got a quote today and was blown away by the $600 quote.

The quote was for a new stock exhaust, headers back, with a new cat. They said they couldn't bend and mount a new exhaust because it would rattle. The reason was something to do with the rubber hangers the stock exhaust uses.

What have you guys done for a new exhaust? I don't want anything chrome or shiny. I just want something slightly wider than stock, and with less bends. They gave me a quote of "around $100" to get a pipe bent and brackets for the cat and muffler welded on, I'd have to figure out how to mount it myself. I'm considering just drilling through the floor and running U bolts down to hold the exhaust.

How did they mount it? Does it go in the stock hangers?

Mine is from the cat back, 2 1/4 in. It is custom bent and there are no rattles, and it uses all the factory mounting points. I have a shiny chrome muffler though! It sounds like they are just looking to make a buck. When I replaced the converter it was only like $100.

Mine's 2¼" back from the exhaust manifold (no cat) using stock hanger locations, resonaotor, a generic performance muffler and a stainless tip. No rattles, great sound. It cost me about $300.00 installed.

What size is the FMS exhaust?

I stopped by another exhaust shop and was quoted "Around $200" for labor to get a 2" pipe bent and mounted. That is if I supplied the muffler and cat. This guy seemed pretty please at the rubber mounts, saying they were really nice.

Any good sources for a highflow cat and muffler?

if only a stock setup I would go 2.5 in. best bet is a diy kit. I plan to run a 3in turbo back kit, mostly cause I have some bend laying around the shop and I think my turbo outlet is 2.5 or 2.75. None the less, $600 I would laughed in there face and left. Around hear if you have the cat all ready cut off they will do a nice one for 200. Best of luck 8)

I can't imagine the entire exhaust ,unless you know someone

Right now the plan is to get a flange welded on in whatever width the header comes out at, back to the cat, then 2" back to a 16-20" long cherry bomb. The cherry bomb will probably be loud, but it should sound OK. It only costs ~$20, so I can replace it if I don't like it.

                        ....

The Autovalue down the road sells 10 foot long sticks of 409 stainless 2 1/2" pipe for $60 a stick. I bought two of them and took one to a local shop that has a mandrel bender. They charged me $20 to bend the whole stick up into 90 degree bends about 1 foot long. (10 seperate 90 degree bends) You can get the flanges from them too (I did) for about $250 a flange. Bought a stainless cased cat for $65 and put a flowmaster(409 stainless too!) on the back for $65. A 3 foot piece of stainless rod(409) $20) and I had my hanger hookups (I used the stock rubber hangers). I probably spent $250 on the project for material - but it is all stainless and It ain't going anywhere (won't rust)and it includes a new cat. You could probably get all that for about half if you went to NAPA and got just plain exhaust pipe. (100-125). Don't ever exclude local parts shops some of them have more than you think.

not too loud till you hit higher RPM's either. I have the shorter one (16" ?)
