  • gearbox internals swap?

In my junk yard I have a 90 Protege LX (G-series) with 300K miles on it, and a manual 94 v6 Mazda 626 with 100K miles on it.

Can I transfer the 626 gearbox internals into the protege case?
    1) is it in fact a G-series gearbox on the v6 626? It looks very familiar, but for instance the starter in in the front
    2) I've heard something about "2nd revision" G-series, internal shafts being 10mm longer. Can anyone please comment if this would be a problem for me in this particular case?

There are a few different versions of the G series out there with different bell housings

      Here's what I know

The 323 GT/Capri XR2 (BF chassis) - B series engine bell housing, cable clutch operated, 26 spline differential, 3.83 final drive

Protege/escort GT (BG chassis) etc - B series bell housing, hydraulic clutch, bell housing is clocked slightly different then the cable clutch trans, 26 spline diff, 4.11 final drive, internals will interchange with the above tranny

Kia sephia trans - B series bell housing, strengthened case, hydraulic clutch, (I'm un-sure of the final drive and the diff spline count) the ring and pinion gear is approx 1/4" thicker then the above two trannys meaning the internals will not interchange

Probe GT/626/mx6/mx3 - 6 cylinder K series bell housing, hydraulic clutch, 28 spline diff, 626/mx6 has 4.11 final drive, probe GT/mx3 has 4.38, has thicker ring/pinion gear, internals will swap only into the Kia trans....... The 2L 4 cyl FS engine I'm 95% sure had a G series as well but I've never looked into them since I'm not a fan of the FS engine

99ish generation escort ZX2's - Zetec engine bell housing (not sure of the engine series) hydro clutch, 26 spline diff, 3.83 final drive, has the thicker ring/pinion so internals will swap with the Kia trans and K series trans

I've heard rumors of newer cars still using a G series that I'm gunna be researching but that's what I know for now

I personally intend on taking the ZX2 trans internals and swapping them into my KL trans for a more street able gearing

Ive heard the Kia trans is 28 spline but I've never confirmed it, that's why I didn't mention the spline count on that one

            Great info Chris!
Any idea who makes the g series box?

Is it made by Mazda? Or a third party like aisin or similar?

I know they're used by Mazda, but who actually built them though, Mazda or a third party, I have no idea

I have a G Kia Sephia transmission out on the floor. I will give you the spline count in a couple hours.

Kia is 28 spline thus why i need a mfactory or xr2 diff

Rick, you can use a diff from a hydro trans too.... BG tranny, they're 26 spline as well but may need to swap the ring gear over though

                      Kia G series is definitely a 28 spline. image.jpg

That's the input shaft.... We're talking about the differential, where the axles go in
