I am no tranny wizard but were I to be trying to do this myself I'd be looking for mechanical clutch linkage and a setup that didn't obsolete existing driveaxles. The bonus of going to anything that once turned 13-14 inch tires is the speedo readings would be more accurate after doing an Aspire/Rio brake swap.
Numerous folks here seem to gravitate toward trannys from Capris with their half-shaft arrangement to better control torque steer.

A cable g series is the optimal set up.
Cables ones are easy to adapt, and yeah the half shaft arrangement is ideal for better torque distribution and control.

The Kia Rio has a cable gearbox too. I'm not sure what type of box that is though. I've heard they used f series but I couldn't know for sure.

If you're thinking of making some serious power, The G series is the way to go.

I just swapped in a Kia Rio trans. It's an easy swap and built a lot better than an E series. It's a cable operated and uses an F series sized flywheel and clutch. Behind my B8 it produces a little bit of torque steer, so If you plan on big power, you might not want to use it.

All the transmissions used on b series engines bolt to all b series engines...so yes you can use a g series on a b3...or a b1 for all you care.

It's a Rio 5 speed. They are kind of an F/G series mix.

They will all interchange (with the correct axle swap). PU241 is running an E series with a BP in one of his cars and Pimptiva had a BP with an E at one time.

I use Nonamekid's writeup as a good rule of thumb for combinations:

                80-100hp - E Series
                140-180hp - F Series
                Over that - G series

But this is just a suggestion and as Rev John has shown, an E can survive behind a BP with proper care and feeding

^ yea but I find it extremely hard to keep that kind of control over the gas petal and I only have a b6 right now. I've got a feeling ill be needing a new tranny soon, this poor little e series is getting beat hard. It's just too fun to roll to 3k in first, put the petal 3/4 to the floor and get slammed into the seat while the front end trys to lift off the ground, then break a tire loose halfway through second and part of third...I bet a BP would get some of 4th too. I've all but destroyed the driver side axle, these skinny little steel rods never did have a chance.

I dont even know what vehicles the f series came in, my next tranny will probably be a hybrid festyspire or an f series/rio because the g series are just too hard to find and I want to try a 410 gear.
