  • Classier MPG modding, TOMinMO im talking to ya

I have a rear washer and wiper on the GL. A popular thread over on ecomodder is the fuel cut switch to coast down with a dead engine but not have to cycle the key so much when at a full stop once at a red light with traffic. Some people interrupt the fuel injectors while coasting down then bump start, some have found the better way it to kick out the distributor signal. anyway im thinking that the washer switch is momentary, and the bottom button of same switch isn't...they could be spliced together with a reverse energize relay to either the fuel injectors or the distriutor without these out of place lookin epoxy'd switches on steering wheels and shifter knobs. It would be seamless and not so mad scientist looking interior. I'd get another dual wiper switch and use that with a relay of course, not kill my wiper wiring. I'm the same guy who doesn't want glowshift switches for a manual fan, but to use oem mazda/ford/kia stuff in the blanks that are there. What do you think?

I am not particularly going in that direction, but it is certainly a valid idea. Seems more useful for city MPG tho, or maybe coasting down long hwy hills. My agenda is simply to see what kind of mileage we can get with a standard test, in this case 60 MPH on the hwy, via motor mods and mild aero mods. What people do after that, via hypermiling or more extensive aero mods, is up to them. And I would like to see people try out various things, like mikeyjd is doing, for example.

Well that's the thing there a lot of larger cars with larger engines that do very decent on the highway the issue is getting up to speed and poking around between red lights before you even get to the highway which is where tiny displacement like the Festiva will shine where in aero plays verhy little role. The train tracks jup ahead you just simply shut the engine off in roll to stop because you're going to be stopped there anyway and that is just money in your pocket

Yeah, while I don't make a point of hypermiling in the city, I often do shut the motor off if a light is just turning yellow on me as I approach it. For the same reason, I now have Aspire aluminum rims with 155/80x13 tires (Kumho Soluses of course), for lighter weight (less energy needed to get 'em moving, and high-speed braking distance is gonna be shorter too).

What if I can't hit 60MPH after my modifications?

I mean I'm only gonna have 8-10HP. I'll be sneezing at anything over 45...

If that is your only vehicle you own that's pretty pathetic I know that's not true so set your goals and hit them and brag

Oh, no... you guys know I have like 4-5 cars/trucks/vans etc. I actually plan on using the Festiva as a local-only ride, so it doesn't need any real HP. More an exercise in 'cuz I can' than anything else.

Plus it'll save me from running a 17MPG van or a 12MPG truck less than 15 minutes down the road a few times a week.

Oh i wasnt being sarcastic, and if times are tough and you DO only have one vehicle and are against the wall, keep it going anyway you can. A broke person isnt going to take out a dead b3 and install a diesel generator and traction motors tho, theyd get another b3. Im onto you...lol. From your posts you gifted with engineering skills i look forward to what you come up with and set in motion. Ugh the almost-puns.

Oh, I /am/ broke. Don't mistake that. I just have a lot of skills and know how things work, and most of my 'net value' is in 'junk'. I'm loaded, if you look at it that way.
