  • Federal b3 ecu?

I was wondering if all 1990-1993 used the same ecu on b3? Any advantage to a 49 state computer if there is one, or is the california better for mpg (or worse) if it exists?

California stuff I'm sure sucks. Both engine management and exhaust plumbing. Can't get power unless you burn fuel, and you can't suck in air for that fuel if you got horse sheet plumbed to meet emissions.

      Not necessarily.

For example my fiancees corolla 1.8 has vvti
which adjusts valve timing to capture the highest pressure intake charge.
As well as a wideband sensor stock to keep the air fuel ratio at a solid 14.5-14.8 on the scanguageII
      Stoich is 14.7.

Meaning her car has very low emissions even at full throttle driving.
Since 14.7 stoich is the aim for a complete smokeless burn.
And her car dips on the freeway when I gun it.

So low emissions doesn't always mean low power.
Rather it can correlate with a very efficient engine.
      Which leads to great mpgs.
We got 40mpg avg over a 2500 mile drive at a constant 70-75mph.

I understand the aspire has neither variable valve timing
Or a wideband air fuel sensor.

      But this post is intriguing.
I too wonder if California emissions standards
Made the festiva or aspire more efficient in that state.

Hm. Good point. Nascar should start installing catalytic converters.

Would this have even been an issue during the early 90's? When did CARB start massively regulating emissions in Ca?

EGR when it all works, works. The problem is those are not maintained. EGR effectively makes your engine smaller at light loads. To add EGR to a 1.3 would be an interesting trial, like take the 1.9 factory header off a 1988 escort GT and flange it to a 1.3 or 1.6. huge egr piping comes back up, and actuate it mechanically. On the other hand, im glad its NOT all there.

            Anyway b3 part numbers anyone?

The problem with california is they test in part per million. A 1.3 burning 'mostly clean' will pollute more on paper than a brand new 4,000lb car. However simply because you will never puchase the amount of fuel in a whole year that the 4,000 pound beast drinks, too bad you fail. (a teaspoon of gasoline released into the air pollutes more than a clean engine running for an hour, something paraphrased) They also fail tests for not having things hooked up even if what comes out the back end IS within the limits. Its NOT all or nothing, very few ways to win, but to have this kind of weather year round i choose to play their games.

No the air fuel ratio I was metering was from the upstream o2 sensor before the catalytic converter.
              Nice try tho.

Theoretically if you kept the engines fuel and air ratio precisely at 14.7
You wouldn't need a catalytic converter.

...California is a welfare state. It need sales tax to keep itself going. Buying fuel has a double tax. Registering your car every year is income for the state. The bi-annual smog inspection carries other certificate fees. Putting vehicle in your name is sales tax on the vehicle even between private sale. In Arizona you renew a drivers lincese something like 4 times in your lifetime, Ive renewed my drivers license 5-6 times already. Its all about $$$. Buying a used car that is already here is as green as you can get, but no one sees it that way if the economy continues to need stimulation.

Sounds like a pain in the butt.
Better keep your car in tip top shape.

You could always buy the dickmeyer adjustable fuel pressure regulator
and dial it down lean whenever you have an emissions inspection coming up.
                  Then readjust after the test.

I've often wondered that myself, it wouldn't make much sense to mass produce a number of ecus to have a handful be different...would increase the price, and you know they spared every expense they could when they made these cars. Would be interesting to swap a wire or two and have factory sequential injection huh..

Running lean causes nox. If u run hotter tmps they see that too. Usually a indcton of dirty egr.

Actually they did this very thing with the Honda Civic they had a model that get very impressive miles per gallon and purposely left it out of California California sells the most cars obviously

Also reason CR lowered. Higher ratios results in a hotter faster burn.
