  • Custom carburator intake for Festy

    Hi all!

I would like to modify a carburator intake from a different car, or build an intake for the B6 in my Festy!

The festy intake i've heard is a bad design, and i've tried to get an intake from a guy that makes them.
Well, that apparently is not going to happen!

I have resources where I can get one welded if I need to, but I am having trouble finding GOOD info on how to design/build one.

    1) I am wondering if there is a well designed carb intake from another vehicle that has the runners the right distance to match the festy and I can cut and replace the flange to match the B3/B6 ports?

    2) Or, I can build a custom intake if I have the needed info on how to build one! (runner length, fuel/air distribution...etc)

Anyone here that can help me in my endeavor?

    Thanks in advance!
    Dan

When I converted a B8-ME to carb, I went to a U pull it junk yard after measuring the port distances on the B8-ME. I looked and measured any make and model carbed 4 cylinder car I found. I wrote down the make and model of the cars that looked like the port distances might be about right. Then I went to an auto parts store and ordered intake manifold gaskets for those engines I had found in the junk yard. I laid the gaskets on the B8-ME head until I found one that had the right spacing. Amazingly, for the B8-ME, it turned out that the Escort Intake (from which everbody gets the Escort carb for conversions) matched the intake port spacing perfectly. This intake won't work for your B6 because the ports will be too far apart because the B8 has a longer head.
    You gonna race that thing?

        That is a good idea!

Hoping someone will chime in with a known intake. I thought I read about someone doing this, but I havent been able to find a thread yet.

I thought it was a honda or toyota intake (ohh, it hurt to type that)

the big issue here is the fact that the intake ports are not evenly spaced on the B6 and most other intakes have evenly spaced ports. given what you're after, a sheat metal intake is your best bet. this will allow you to get the runner length and carb position where you want it without compromise (unless you want to keep it all tucked under a stock hood).

What about modifying an EFI festiva manifold to work with your choice of carburetor? The plenum unbolts and a plate could be fabricated to hold a weber or a couple stromberg 97's. Make plugs for the injector ports. I'm only half serious about this because those carbs are more expensive than F.I., but it would be cool to see 'Bergs sticking out the hood of a Festy.

dr, I still have an extra set of Ford 1.5L KB Laser twin carbs + adapter + air cleaner + twin choke + badge.
The only think you need is to do is install a low pressure electric fuel pump or a high pressure Festiva pump with a Holley bypass regulator. It's essentially a bolt on. Fun.

I have thought about this. There was a thread I saw, where someone was holding Weber DCOE side draft's up to an EFI intake. Looked freakin' awesome!
The horns faced toward the front of the Festy, over the valve cover.

Please clue me in, as to how well the EFI intake would work, setup with a Weber 32/36. I have one mounted on a B3 intake now. No likey the intake!

If it would work well, I would attempt to make it so!

What I really need is a crash course in intake design!
I have the access to have one made at my job.
I can cut the needed aluminum and tubing and a great welder at work who will weld it for me.

When you see two puppies moving together in perfect harmony, it makes you feel gooooood. I like the fact that the air cleaner will pop straight off by spinning off three wing nuts in less than ten seconds. The carbs are much closer to the cylinders, and are perfectly sized for a B6.

Doing some research, I found plenum shape for efi and carb are different and would need to be addressed.

The efi plenum's are usually tapered smaller at the opposite of the TB, as efi airflow enters from the side of the plenum, and to equalize flow the plenum tapers smaller to accomplish this.
For a carb to be mounted centrally on an efi intake, I would imagine needing a plenum that has taper on BOTH sides.
                          Probably something like this plenum:

I dont think the festy plenum would properly to equalize the flow.

Also, all my research on intake design has suggested using equal length runners. Most factory carb intake runners are not equal on all the intakes I have looked at

                          What to do?

                          Make your own!

Maybe modding a carb plenum onto an efi plenum? Most efi plenum's use equal runners.

Make one from scratch? (This is what i'd like to do or have one done)

I have found formula's to calculate runner length and diameters for various applications.

I still would like more info on this. It would be nice if we had an intake engineer here to answer these questions!
