  • Auxiliary radiator

I still have some cooling issues on the BPT. On hot days 90°+ the temp gauge will stay within the normal operating temp range of 190° to 207°, the thermostat temp and the temp in which the fan comes on. usually no problems except when I'm getting on the throttle or on the highway going 75mph. The fan comes on and stays, the temp gauge will start to creep. I then turn the heater on and it will come down or at least stabilize and stop climbing.

My thought was to fabricate a rear heater box beside the spare tire or in the spare tire well. I'd run hose and/or hard line that I'd tee off from the normal heater hoses. Run these to the rear and into a box that contained a heater core. Install a fan and relay in the box and have it come on at a certain temp. I'd have air drawn from the interior and a hole in the rear floor for it to exit. My first concerns would be getting the air out, might need a bleed off in the rear.

This winter it will be getting some more power so I need to fix the cooling situation 1st.

    Thoughts, ideas, comments??

An all aluminum honda civic radiator with a 1500cfm fan. No room for a bigger fan or radiator. Also running mostly water, a little coolant for corosion resistance and water wetter.

i like the idea but there is no need to run it inside. What you should do is mount it in the rear and have it angled forward (front lower than the rear), That way it will scoop the air (with out applying up-force on the car) and will get enough cooling just from going through the radiator. Specially if this happens when you are going 75+.

Every car I have owned has had a turbo in it, until I bought this latest festiva.. I plan to fix that though.

i like the spare tire area idea. make a removable cover for service access to the radiator. you could cut the front and back of the spare tire well to alow air to freely flow thru it. have it on the highest angle you can so that with the help of a fan it will have air flowing. only problem i see is circulating your coolant. will the regular water pump circulate the water enough? or is it one of those anything is better than nothing situations...

btw...the b3 i got from you still running strong, thanks

Get an electric pump & plumb it in after it leaves the block but before the rad. I woulg guess that should help. But if you do that you might need to have some sort of bypass so the engine could get up to temp.

Does this happen often with the bp? Anyone else having problems??

              Just personal interest.

I'd try diverting one of the heater core exhausts to the outside. Then you just have to set your heater to footwell and turn the fan on and you have extra cooling.

My BP car is fine with the single core festiva radiator. Never gets hot and the fan rarely cycles. It's the BPT I have problems with. When I'm boosting it is when it starts to warm up.

I've thought abought blocking off the left floor vent and connecting the right side to the firewall. Then in the colder weather remove it and make a plug for the hole.

what i mean about moving the trans cooler,

it will take a heat load off of the radiator

                      I don't have a trans cooler.

                          another thought

you might be able to rig a second heater core where your a/c evaporator should be and install a blower on the inside and blower the core in reverse flow to the outside using the fresh air intake

if there is enough room in between the motor and firewall, but below the intake, as long as you have the room there for a heater core, you could just run it from your regular heater core lines (just need to make splitters to run the second heater core) and put a fan on there and wire it to come on with your normal fan at the same time
