My engine is completely new and the valves are adjusted to .10 and .012 as to spec but it sounds like they are loose I have gone thru them all twice now and no difference. Any one have any clue as to the rattle ?

Did you adjust them while the engine was warm? That is how the manual says to do it.1960 willys pickup

Mechanical valve lifters are going to make noise. Your engine won't be totally silent like with hydraulic ones. The noise should sound something like the sound a screwdriver would make if you tapped it lightly on the bell housing. Make sure you are adjusting them with the cam lobe at the lowest point for each valve. You gonna race that thing?

You can do it cold too.

And see if that matters although I have rebuilt numerous engines and never had this happen

Are you using a cam for mechanical lifters? The profile can be different from hydraulic to mechanical. The hydraulic cam can have "sharper" points on the lobes allowing the valve to snap shut quicker making more noise. I bought a "mechanical lifter conversion kit" years ago for an old Chevy six cylinder that had hydraulic lifters and I could never get it to run as quiet as a stock mechanical lifter engine should. You gonna race that thing?

Oh, yeah, I should have mentioned that too. Mine do make some noise. They're silent till it starts to warm up then you can hear them a little. I have a hydro cam and mech rockers.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

can I run the Aspire FI rockers on it ? Would that quiet them down ? It does NOT hurt for power or miss just rattles like a Singer sewing machine
I also have the Aspire cam can I put them both in and will it make a differenceLast edited by Kbaker2012; 12-27-2013, 07:20 PM.

^Yes, you can. If you're carbed you can't use the cam because it doesn't have the fuel pump lobe, but the rockers will work.
I've run Aspire rockers on a stock cam with no issues.Last edited by sketchman; 12-27-2013, 08:27 PM.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

I adjusted my valves yesterday, i had a really noisy one, when i got done it ran quiter, not silent, when it warmed up you coud hear it pretty well. So you are not alone. Im going to play with different oils until i find one that may help. My motor only has 127k on it also.Yellow 91 festiva GL 5speed
