  • bp 1.8dohc swap

    Escort lx-e rear ended and for sale for 450$ with 88k on it. Looks like grandmas car but has 1.8 bp dohc. Is this a good deal? How hard is the swap. . . Its n auto trans and i have a 5speed in my GL
    Yellow 91 festiva GL 5speed
    Red 88festiva L 4spd
    Blue 91festiva L 5spd (bad tranny, sloppy suspension)

    It will bolt in and you need to build/fab the passenger (right) side mount. I'm not sure but I think you will need the ECU from an manual Escort for your Festiva since it's a manual trans.
    Maybe some one else can verify that.

      i have an LX-E automatic as my DD. NEVER an engine problem in 2+ years of abuse but the 4EAT trans SUCKS! it just WILL NOT KICK DOWN unless floored and then all hell breaks loose. dangerous on wet roads. this was a real BONEHEAD move by ford. this screamer should've been available ONLY with a 5 spd MT and if you can't shift gears, you had no business getting that engine. i'm sure it was more CAFE bull. but ya, GREAT engine.

          U swapped the BP and auto from the protege in your festiva?
          I have wanted to do that swap for a while, manly because friends/family couldn't drive my last BP swap festiva, and having that extra gear from the protege auto would be nice over a festiva 3 speed auto. How different is swapping in a bp/auto from a protege? Vs bp/5 speed from protege?

            How difficult is the swap? First engine swap for me. Im confodent in my ability, as far as special work or wiring what may be difficult?

              no gestiva, i didn't swap the LX-E/ATX into a Festiva. it's still in the used Escort i bought. i'll save the engine when the rest of the car craps the bed but i'll bury the 4EAT in a deep hole so no one else gets exposed to its evilness.

                You need a TPS from a manual and the ecu, have to run two extra wires I believe. and make the mount if you are keeping the E series tranny.
                If you want to run a full stand alone engine management then you need the auto TPS.

                  If you keep the stock 5 speed the stock clutch will slip like crazy and don't work well after 100hp so I Hurd from several members the exceedy clutch kit from eBay will hold up better I got one and I'm finishing putting mine in my car. But there is 2 extra wires, one on the distributor and one on the brown plug on the passenger side and there is several plugs you got to swap out with the festiva harness. But check out Matt-swabs BP swap guide it's a pdf file has every thang you will need
