  • mfactory vs. speedprotege torsen????

    Good Day everyone

Has anyone had experience with the updated Torsen differential from mazda?

Im debating on throwing either an Mfactory LSD or a welded Torsen. The Torsen is almost $300 cheaper. Any body have any insight?

The transmission is going into a festiva ice race car. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks!

I dont have any experience with either but EVERY person that i have talked to with a Mfactory is MORE than happy with the product.

The car is going to be on ice, so depending on how each diff reacts, I need an open diff for corner entry to rotate the car, but need the limited slip to rip out of the corner and use that powa! I'm done messing around this year no more welded diff and no more one tire fire

I dont think the mazdaspeed diffs are any good. A couple of guys on clubprotege ran them and broke them. here is one link that talks about the failure.

I would save your money and get a mfactory and call it a day. You cant beat the quality or the price. It will out live any transmission.

Protege ones are prone to failure

I've never heard of an Mfactory failing

I have an Mfactory in my car and under hard acceleration in a corner, the car feels a bit hard to control if the inside tire loses traction

2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

As I go around a corner and floor it, the inside tire will try spinning, at the same time the outside tire still has traction so the diff will try keeping both tires spinning at the same speed, this results in the outside tire basically pushing the car around the turn

              Hope that makes sense lol

                that makes perfect sense!!!!!

Because in ice racing, you need the open diff to help you on turn in, but as you fight for traction you need the outside tire to rotate the car and pull you out of the corner

this is what i need thanks! Guess im going to spring and buy it. Even though its going to be 1200 installed, this diff is the difference between first and second.

                  mfactory vs. speedprotege torsen????

I bet on ice it would be much better but it effects my car enough to the point I want power steering

But it's also an easy install for the diff, just saying lol

Is it actually? i thought it might have been a pain. Just need a drill press for rivets right?

I used a grinder to take the heads off the rivets.... Getting the rivets out is the hardest part, but beware that the older G series tranny's have a different sized rivet holes then the newer ones and Mfactory's bolts are good for the newer style.... Basically be prepared to have your ring gear drilled out to match the Mfactory bolts

Julian, I am pretty sure Robin his done this install on his car for the G series. He or Chris can probably give you some idea of how they managed the ring gear swap.

I'll dig up the write up on how to tear down a G series.... Swapping the ring gears is pretty straight forward as well

Here is a pic of what I did last night I grind it down the rivets like DamKid said

Here is another thread on installing the diff, it looks basically the same as our transmission

We will call you the butch from now on. How much time have you spent grinding so far?
