  • Axle Shaft Options -BP swap

    Hey guys!

Really kinda desperate, so hopefully you guys have some insight I've got a race this weekend, and I want to bring spare axle shafts like we normally do. I have a spare passenger side, but need to buy a drivers side.

We've been using XR2 axle shafts but nobody has those in stock. Do we have any other options? Car is a 1.8BP swap.

Can I use Escort GT/ Protégé? I know they're about 10 millimeters longer than xr2.

    What about mx3 1.6?

Something I might be missing? Any help would be awesome. Thanks guys!!!!!

Don't know the year range, but I did it once with some I ordered for an '01 Rio, so those should work. If I had to guess, probably '00-'02.
        No festiva for me ATM...

You can use the axles from a Capri XR2 with the intermediate shaft and make a custom bracket to fit the BP motor because the BP motor is an inch wider.

Here is a picture of HotWheels' bracket

The mx-3 1.6 uses an F-series tranny and it is the same width as the protege and escort, so those axles won't work.

no one told me they were down. Let me go see if I can find those cheat sheets and find someone to get me access to my post so I can fix it...

                        Thanks everyone!!

I did some research and it appears that the Rio and xr2 are my options. They seem to be the only ones that have the 26 spline input and 24 spline output. Everything else is either 26-26 or 24-24.

I was able to order an xr2 shaft from Amazon with overnight freight. Hot wheels, I wish I had seen your post sooner. I certainly would have driven out there and bought them tonight, but I pulled the trigger on amazon already unfortunately.

Anyway, you guys are the best. Thanks again!

Looks like the rio axles are:
                          left: 23 27/32"
                          right: 35"

                          XR2 are:
                          left: 23 1/4"
                          right: 21 3/16"

                          According to Rock Auto.

So those of you running rio axles just aren't using an int shaft? Do you have to grind the BP oil pan like when you use the E series trans w/ no int shaft?
Either way, a huge part of using a G series trans is getting close to equal length axles!

Yes you use the Rio axles to ditch the intermediate shaft.

Yes they are no longer equal length then.

However I had no torque steer issues in my turbo car and ran 12 second 1/4's all day long.

Do you use both rio axles or only the passenger side one?
