I want to soon be turboing my bp festiva bit need make sure other stuff is in order beforehand. My car has a 3 speed auto I believe. Is there any options as to keeping it an auto or would I be better off going manual for this?

I have thrashed two three speeds in my b6t swapped 90.... One happened when the car weighed 3200lbs.....with about 110kmiles on the OEM trans. Then we swapped in trans number two and the car was stored for four years, all the weight was removed from the car and I began driving daily. It lasted about 6months before it really started slipping badly under hard throttle uphill. I have been collecting parts to swap in a g series from the turbo Capri, just so I no longer have to wonder if the auto will leave me walking. And to top it all off the auto and b6t is hideous at highway speeds around 70 on fuel........

The trans can handle the power, you just have to have a good starting point and take care of the thing.
Autos have clutches, just like the big one in front of a manual, they wear out. If you know someone that works on automatics, you can have them rebuild yours. Look into the ATX mods by yvan on here.
But yeah, if you are hoping for MPG at all, forget the auto. You're looking at 3000 rpm at around 55, and the B6T really starts running rich up that way. Its a lot of fun, especially around town though.91GL BP/F3A with boost

I agree the auto is good fun in town, hell even on the highway at 70 if I mash it the car is very hard to compare to anything else.... But getting ~20mpg is hard to fathom in a Festiva..... I enjoy the car the way it is bit I think the 5speed will fit the way I want to use it better than the auto.... And since we did the b6t swap we ran a large 10x14 trans cooler. But I consider the first trans death to be expected due to the fact the car weighed almost twice its original weight...

I got 24-26 mpg with my BP turbo and a fairly rough tune, I dont see why 30 mpg would be unreasonable with a decent tune and more conservative driving.
I believe that extra clutch packs can be used when rebuilding for a quicker shift and longer life. I think Jim did this when he rebuild the one going into my car soon.91GL BP/F3A with boost

I don't mind the mileage as I do have a stock festive that's a 5 speed for that. I just really wanted to know if the tranny would hold the power or be better swapping it out. I'll have look up some of the auto trans mods.1990 Red Festiva STOCK "pregnant roller skate"

I dont know much about it-i hate automatics and have never owned any- but I've heard guys with their big diesels when they add power or tow lots they somehow increase the fluid pressure in the trans. I have no idea how, what that does or if it was actually done or just an idea or joke. You'll have to look into it. I think a trans cooler is kind of a given.

I have a ford diesel I'm getter bigger and better as well just take ALOT more money than a festy lol. Main thing with them is tempature. I want my trans to.run as cool as possible on that. They make a bulletproof trans cooler that's bigger to bring the temp down around 100 to 150 degrees.I'm not sure about fluid pressure I never heard of that but may be possible.
I.also tend not liking an automatic car. But this one is already swapped and is auto and for time being and money wise for now I would rather try keeping it auto. On down road after I finish my truck I would love to make it 5 speed.

The guy has so much money in that truck though, its insane. Just keeps throwing money at it. Modified his intake manifold cos the rear cylinder wasn't getting enough air and installed a 5inch intake and filter using exhaust tubing. First WOT run and the intake pipe collapsed. Then he tried to yank it off with the truck idling and nearly got his arm sucked into the turbo. Have to stand on a stepladder to work on the dumb things too. He probably spends more in 4 months on that truck than i have on my festiva in 8 years....

Lol I have stand on a ladder work on mine to. I put 4 inch lift on it and honestly want more. I'm not looking an insane amount of power out of mine honestly. I already ton full exhaust and intake. Once I can put my headstuds on i can do bigger turbo with batmowheel. Sct livewire programmer and bigger injectors and I'll be really close to my goal. Maybe take the stock turbo and put it on my festy lol.

I just ported the intake. Exhaust manifold is still stock. Just went from 3 inch stock exhaust with resonator and muffler to 4 inch mbrp straight pipe. It has ARE Air intake to.the turbo. It already has a batmowheel in Stock turbo. Very light program on it. Dynos 405 hp with 700 ft lb torque. I can't go more until I do my studs.
