  • protege engine and trans removal

Scored a 94 Protege today for nothing basically. Whats the best way to get the engine and trans out. Out the top or drop the sub frame and let it out the bottom. I've not totally ruled out just cutting off the front end with a torch. Nathan

When I got my escort motor from the junkyard I cut the sub frame with a torch, removed the motor mounts and let it set on the ground. After disconnecting everything I then lifted the car with a cherry picker and slid out the the drive train.

Or you could just pull it out as you normally would.

if you have a hoist or crane you can just pull it right out the top.

if you dont have mechanical power to remove the engine and you are removing the engine and transmission manually then cut the front of the car off with a saws all or torch. secure a long pipe or plank to the top of the engine with chains so that the pipe or plank extends out a meter or so past each fender. then you and a buddy need to lift it up a few cm and pull it forward and out of the engine bay. the engine and trans of a 1.8bp weigh several hundred pounds so you and youe bud need to be fairly strong.

i have removed engines both ways and i prefer mechanical power but using a pipe or plank also works, but its back breaking work. we actuaally broke a 4x4 so it needs to be a study plank.
