  • BP engine: new vs used

    Hey so I went into my local advance auto store and asked them how much a remanufactured (new) bp engine would cost. They told me it was about $2700. I was wondering if it would be worth it. I bought an engine from them for my last car and it was wonderful, it was about half the price though.
    My question is simple: would it be worth while to invest in a brand new engine or would I be better off buying a 94 protege lx or ford escort gt or even a miata and using that engine?
    also while I have your attention I have done some research and found out that many mazda bps have VICS but the miata's bp does not have VICS but still has the same (or slightly more) horsepower. How does VICS effect the engine's performance and is that something I should or shouldnt look for when in the market for a mazda BP engine. thanks

    Planning to leave it stock or do a high boost setup, or low boost? What do you want to do with it? Daily driver, autocross, drag...
    What do you value your time at? I could buy and install a couple of used engines at that price i think. What is a good used engine worth in your area as a comparison? Are you patient enough to properly break in a new motor? Any warrenty from the new one or from junk yards on a used one? Junk yard may have better warrenty

      The miata intake manifold doesn't easily fit in the FWD chassis. VICS is helpful in midrange and low end TQ, so it won't show up on overall HP numbers. Since a festiva is so light (compared to the cars that got the BP engine) you really don't need the VICS system. The BPT variants didn't come with the VICS system either, but they have intake manifold designs that work with a FWD (transverse) engine layout.
      There is a happy medium between a reman engine and a salvage yard or buying a car. That is a JDM imported engine. Many JDM importers will include a warranty on the engine. These engines are, often times, in much better condition with much lower miles than what you could find here stateside. I've purchased a few JDM engines and have been very happy with what I received.

        I plan on using it as a daily for a while but eventually I want to put a turbo on it with not too high of boost but enough to have fun with daily

        The warranty on the one from advance is pretty awesome, I dont remember exactly but it might even be life long. I havent found a mazda bp by itself anywhere near my area, so its gonna be roughly 1000 or somewhere a little more or less for a used car that has a bp with low ish miles.

        but to answer your question I hope to daily drive my car for a long time.

          ok so I shouldnt go for a miata bp, good to know. thank you for that info on the VICS I did not know that information. I remember seeing that JDM imports generally have low miles but I never thought about it for some reason, thanks for that I will look into it. do you have any sites to recommend? I may even call an import shop about an hour away from me to see if they can do that. thanks again

            I've purchased 2 engines from 2 different ebay sellers and 1 local that was a second hand purchase. The engines that I've gotten have been obviously low mileage as I noticed on tear down (I still haven't torn 1 down now so that only goes for the 2 that I have). The insides of both engines were amazingly free of wear or grime. I know that some people have had other experiences that weren't so pleasant, but my own personal experience has been great.

            Also, one thing to consider, remanufactured engines may not be the best condition either. Often times, reman engines are not machined or assembled to the tight tolerances that are followed by the original engine manufacturer. Also, the quality of the replacement parts may not be as high as what was used at the factory. This is especially true with Mazda engines. I know (from the Mazda engines that I have personally rebuilt) Mazda used very high quality parts and the after market parts (piston rings and bearings especially) are very inferior to what was originally in the engine. I highly doubt that typical engine remanufacturers are using original mazda parts to rebuild the engines.
            When you buy a low mileage engine, that doesn't need to be rebuilt, you are getting the parts and assembly quality that the original manufacturer used. Your getting a higher quality engine.
