  • Auto to Manual - Speedo Off

I just did the automatic to manual swap in my 1993 LG Festiva. I also just got a speeding ticket. It turns out my speedometer is ~13% off. I can't find anything on the forum to help me understand why. I checked the drive gear on the speedo cable (the part the is in the transmission) and they are exactly the same. Is there another piece I'm missing here? Why would my speed be off now?
    Thanks for your help!

Are you running larger than 12in tires?

I've only experienced fluctuations that large when the friction drive in the speedometer has been tampered with (like by adding a lubricant of some kind). That would change the friction coefficient in the speedometer drive.
Thought typically the speedo will read higher than actual speed.

Do yourself a favor and verify that the speedo cable isn't damaged/broken, which could lead to a low speed reading.

I will check that. Does anyone know if the drive gears and driven gears are any different between a manual and automatic transmission? I pulled a 1993 automatic out in favor of a 1992 manual (5-speed).
          Thanks!

Afaik, the drive gear and ring gear are the same between transmissions. This is supported by the fact that you can swap clusters between auto and manual cars with no ill effect.

Do you know that the speedo was dead on before? My original got senile in later life so that it was true at 30 mph, high at speeds below 30, and low above 30 to the point that 58 was actually 70.

Great question - actually, I don't know for sure. I got the car and immediately went to work swapping out the transmission. I would have thought the guy I bought it from would have told me, but if not - If it wasn't caused by the transmission swap, any thoughts on what I need to look at? It doesn't seem like it should be that complicated, but I'm not sure what I can fix/investigate to fix this one - any help would be greatly appreciated!!

                  Upgrade to good tach cluster?

I like the sound of that - what are my options here? Aftermarket only? If so, what have you had success with?
                    Thanks again for the thoughts!

Factory tach cluster... Put a WTB in the for sale section. Plug and play usually. Just have to move the speedo cable closer to the centerline of the dash.
