  • Transmission question

I am debating either a b6t swap or a bp (eventually turbo, need to do more research on bps) swap my biggest concern is a transmission. While i was debating other things it crossed my mind that my brother has a Mazdaspeed Protege (03-04 i think, its turbocharged) with a bad motor. I was just wondering if anyone knew what transmissions these had and if they would bolt to a b-series motor, just something i thought of and figure i could get it for baiscally free. I did a quick search and one site showed it was a g-series trans and mentioned a few cars that i thought were bp donors but i dont know if was the year or not (didnt have time to do more searching)

    Thanks for any input.

IIRC the MS protege is an F series engine, so the g series transmission bell housing will not be compatible. May want to talk to damnkid about possible bell housing swaps though
    Trees aren't kind to me...

    currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

Can anyone give me some pointers on what to look for to id this transmission? I dont know mazda stuff but I did find where someone talked about using a miata motor in a mazdaspeed protege so there might be some hope.

Thanks for any help, going to try to look at it tomorrow maybe and figure it out.

Pretty sure it is some form of a G-series transmission. I think the bellhousing is different, but I think the diff has the same splines count etc. My .02... Keep the transmission, go find yourself an F-series engine and get creative.

It is a g series but it has a different bell housing and it has a 28 spline diff. It won't bolt to a b series engine and you would have to use escort gt axles with that diff.

But it's got a factory viscous LSD and double row synchros. If you could build a hybrid G series, that's the trans to have.

Didn't the lsd have some issues? I think the carriers crack and need to be welded up.

I know the lsd's are notorious for breaking. A lot of folks have swapped to an open diff in the turbo proteges because of it. Gonna have to see what it would take to work, like i said i think i can get it for next to nothing

Also do these have removable bellhousing that could be swapped or are they a 1 piece case. I havent had time to go look yet

The case splits in 2 pieces so in theory you could swap the bell housing side. But that would require a whole transmission with the correct bell housing. There are also minor differences in gear thicknesses between years so it's hard to guarantee it will directly swap with no machining.

MAZDA updated the diff. It was a flaw in the casing of the diffs. Also, a festiva will be much less apt to break the diff, due to it's drastic reduction in weight and rolling resistance compared to the MSP. The Viscous differential would be nice on a road coarse.
