  • B8-ME turbo help! Or Input!

Ok so I swapped a B8 into my car a few months ago because of the simplicity of the swap. I chose not to swap a BP because of all the wiring that goes with it. Now I am wanting alittle more power to play with so I am pondering on adding a low boost turbo! Running maybe 10PSI... had anyone done this successfully without a MegaSquirt system? Maybe just using a FMU, wide band O2, and stock injectors?

.... Eurotiva. But not stock injectors.

At 10 psi you'll need a stronger clutch. Are you still running the Eseries trans?

I did. I ran a stock b8me, an fmu, an extra inline fuel pump, stock b8 injectors, stock b8 ecu. The setup non turbo did 99 whp on the dyno. 10 lbs of boost (small Mitsubishi turbo) it made 154whp.

It was also rear turbo which is questionable whether it works as good as a front turbo.

I ran a 12:1 FMU. Hope that helps

Sorry, I had remembered something about non-stock injectors with one of your builds.

Does anyone have know what size turbo would be optimal for this set up?? Maybe a vj11??

No, the vj11 is dated, has too small a wastegate and doesn't use a commonly available flange.
I'd use a Garrett turbo for a readily available flange and a good availability if parts and service. A T3 from an old Saab 900 or 9000 is a good size for an 8 valve 1.8 liter engine, and they can be found cheap. Another good choice would be a Garrett gt1752 from an older Saab 9-3 or 9-5. Also a gt2554 from a Nissan sr20det. These turbos can all be purchased used for under 200 dollars, and will out last and out perform most Chinese copies.

Thank you for your input! I'll keep my eye open for something around that size!

Alright, so I have the turbo and kit rounded up... it's a 50 trim turbo.... with a inline fuel pump, stock injectors and a 12:1 FMU do you think 10 pounds of boost will be too much and will cause it to be too lean? Or should I push less boost?

You should buy an AFR gauge if you're going to be going into uncharted territory. Also 50 trim turbos tend to be on the larger side. It will be laggy.

50 trim is not a size. This is an eBay turbo marketing slogan. I'd stay away from cheap knock off turbochargers. This whole "trim" talk is widespread ignorance.

I plan to run a AFR and widen and O2 sensor with is set up so I can monitor the ratios... now my next question is... how Much longevity could I exspect out of a set up like this? 1k miles? 10k? Not dogging on it but daily driving with a occasional race?

That all depends on a lot of factors. Some of them are:
                            - What turbo have you chosen? (50 trim what? T3? T4? GT28? What turbo is it?)
-How well the tuning suits the engine/turbo combination.
-Condition of the engine being used.
                            -maintenance of the engine.
-driving habits. (If you have the system tuned for max boost, but you drive it around out of boost all the time it could wash the oil down because of a rich mixture, resulting in premature wear.)

Nobody can give you an accurate estimate of how long this will last if they don't have the facts about your setup.
